Does anyone know (or know where I can find out) what the stock gear ratios are for a '63 FJ40. We finally finished our project and have been driving the truck and the gearing seems awfully low. Top end is maybe 40 mph. 1st gear is only for crawling, otherwise useless as it is so low. I'm thinking we might regear just enough so that its not wrapped out on the street. Any suggestions. What's the best way to go about this? Gears from another cruiser or aftermarket like Randy's? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Sounds like your transfer case is stuck in low range.

Easy way to figure out your ratio.

Jack up the rear end. Have two people spin the rear tires at the same time (same direction too)
You sit under the cruiser and count how many times the DS spins....

got around 9.45:1 final drive ratio in third gear (assuming three speed)

That is close to the same ratio as second gear in high range (I said close)

:D
