Gasket really needed for Durabek'd flares?

...getting ready to Durabek flares. I really can't see the gasket fitting properly with the roll on finish. Some don't fit well on factory paint. If you silicone seal the holes in the body, what could it hurt to leave the gaskets out of the reinstall? Stuff colloects under the flares anyway. If anything leaving the gaskets off would help eliminate some of this problem. Comments please. TX.

I put new flare gaskets back on after I durabak'ed my flares. I taped off the little back portion of the flare where the gasket adheres so I had a clean surface for the adhesive from the new gaskets to stick too. It's been almost four years  and no problems. In fact I just opened one of the two single quart cans I saved from this original project to put on the fenders of my M101 CDN trailer and it was still good 4 years later!! The brilliant black finish now on the trailer makes me want to take the last quart and redo the flares on the truck. Probably just carefully tape the flares right on the truck and carefully apply that last quart. Used the last roller on the trailer, so I'd just have to use a brush.

Here's my write up on it. Post 3 last pic shows how I taped off the back of the flare that meets the truck body where the gasket goes.

I sprayed mine with U-pol and put them back on without the gaskets and it looks terrible without them. Not only that, but the gaskets will prevent the hard flares from rubbing the paint off your body and then causing rust. I will be putting the gaskets on soon.

Brentbba - your original thread is what got me thinking about this. Tired of seeing all the " just rip them off " posts.

Thanks for the input guys. I will use gaskets.

spartan FYI, I purchased new gaskets (black ones) from the Toyota dealer when I painted my flares. The old white ones were dingy and yellow. If I remember correctly, I think the gaskets cost about 7.00 each and that was retail at the local dealer.
