Gasket or RTV for FJ40 3rd members ?? (1 Viewer)

I have noticed on several online "How to" Differential R&P or Locker articles, that everyone appears to use paper gaskets for 3rd member installation.  

I have always used Copper RTV on Dana Diff Covers.  Is there a specific reason to use the paper on Cruiser 3rd members?

I have always felt that RTV is much easier to clean and re-prep.

Opinions please

I can't think of a single good reason not to use RTV on a diff cover. It's a lot easier to carry in the toolbox and somewhat easier to clean. I'm not sure why you would use copper. Isn't that the high heat stuff?

just had the better luck with sealing with copper than blue or black....

but my question is specific to FJ40 3rd members....

Did not know if the gasket is critical to axle alignment or ring gear clearance to the axle housing....

I prefer to use a gasket on covers, and blue RTV on the 3rd member. Never had a problem with gear clearances or leaks.

Just my preference.

I use RTV onb the trail and gaskets when working at home.

one or the other, not both. the problem with rtv leaking may be the ingredients...silicone based rtv will break down when exposed to oils...try "right stuff" by permatex.
