Gas gauge stopped working in my 1978 FJ40 today. What‘s the first thing to check? I have roughly half a tank currently.

First the fuse. Second the ground and connector to sending unit. Then the sending unit , best way is to attach DVM and see if there is the correct ohms as the sender is exercised. Something will lead somewhere.

My 78 gauge went whacko one day after I had filled the tank and got accurate gauge readings until the gauge reached 1/2, then it dropped to empty and stayed there until refilled. Pulled the sender and found the copper wire wrapping had come apart. Put in a new sender and VOILA - has worked perfectly since.
