Well, the 50 lb struts wouldn't keep the hood up any more. So I replaced the 5 year old struts on my car's hatch and put it's tired 95 lb struts on the 40. Now, the hood opens by itself when the latches are released.
 
I’m have been considering adding struts to my 45. I curious what you all think would happen if you forgot to latch the hood down with struts installed. Would rip them off or would they be strong enough to to prevent the hood from flopping all the way up and striking the roof?

@bikeesmurf I guess with stronger struts you would forget to latch the hood, since it would pop up if not latched.

If the hood wasn’t latched it would be open.

The 10 mm ball and socket probably wouldn’t be strong enough.
