I have 2 questions as I'm an FJ60 owner.... and looking to get an FZ80.

What is the "typical" average life of an FZ80 auto transmission and Tcase?

Do 90% of them go beyond 150K mile?

I'm looking at a '96 FZ80 fully loaded with e-lockers, 3rd row seating, sunroof, black ext/charcoal leather int, CD, towing package for $13K. 95K miles

Is this a fair price? Kelly Blue book says it is worth less.

Thanks,

Mark

220k on my trans and t-case, only problem is sometimes trans will slip on 1-2 shift, it is a common problem for those with the a442f transmissions that are on the 93-95 models, mine has been "slipping" for around 30,000 miles and has caused no malfunctions (at least that i can tell). It still shifts smoothly and operates flawlessly besides the occasional slip on the 1-2 shift. I have towed both a 1,000 pound sailboat and 3,000 (estimate) pound motor boat regularly for the past 100,000 miles. Trans and T-case have seemed up to the job. Ok enough rambling, What im trying to say is yes, 90 percent or more trans and tcases will last way beyond 150,000 miles. Id say you can reasonably expect twice that if they have been mantained properly,

I thought the A440F was in the 90-92 3FE powered ones...

I have a 94 with the A442F tranny. 265k miles and no issues at all.

Slight correction- he has the A442F tranny which is on the '93-94 models. The one you are looking at has an A343F tranny found on the '95-97 models. Quite a few A442Fs on the board have had solenoid and flaring issues, but nothing too serious. A few A343Fs have had some noise-in-reverse issues (there's a TSB on this) but nothing that affects functionality.

I was hoping that was the most common mileage scenario like most Toyota products aside from a handful of flukes.

Is this a good price for an e-Lockd, fully loaded, FZ80? Or should I keep looking....?

I just bought a 97 tranny used to swap into my 96. I've had slow reverse and no reverse occationally since 65k. No reverse just chatter started when in reverse and under load (backing a 3500lb trailer up a hill in HI) and then has slowly degraded to where a few weeks ago I had it happen backing out of a parking spot that was a slight grade up hill.

Long story short, I found a 97 tranny in a yard that was in driving distance with only 64k on it for $750.00. I'll be picking it up this weekend.

Not what you wanted to hear but if you are concerned about the trannies the ones used in the 97s that were built in 97 will most likely perform better.

I would hardly call it "quite a few", more like very few.

It is hard to say what is a good price for a vehicle I have never seen, if it is in perfect condition with good maintenance history, no rust (not just body including hardware undercairage, engien bay etc) garrage kept etc I might be willing to pay that much above current market for the right vehicle.

also prices varry quite a bit between areas,

your best bat is to look at every FZJ80 in your area for a wile and get a feel for what is out there and how the market is, after a bit of time you will know what is the right vehicle when you see it.

for me it was 96 or 97 with lockers, no rust, sound mechaniucal and asthetic condition. in several months of looking only two met the chriteria, the first wanted more that I was willing to pay we haggled but could not meet in the middle.

the second wound up in my driveway.

CDan- you took the bait...I was waiting for you to chime in on that!

I don't think you need to worry about the transmission and the t-case as much as you have to worry about the head gasket.

I bought my 96 for $12k two years ago with 99k mi (fully loaded like yours but no lockers).

I don't do my own work, so I spent over $600 doing the 100k mile tune-up (new wires, plugs, dist cap, rotor, oil, filter, diff fluids, trans fluid, coolant flush, clean throttle body).

Thanks for the feedback guys. Looks like I will be test driving this truck in the next few days then and giving it a looksie under my microscope. It will be rust free as it is about 1 hour from the coast and the area it is for sale in is pretty well off. I imagine the interior/exterior will be cherry.

I can do all my own work.. but would farm out the headgasket change if it ever happened to me. Once the tires wear out an OME 2.5" lift kit and 33's would be the next mod.

OFF TO SHARPEN A COUPLE FRESH NEEDLES.......

Just thought I would let you know what I paid on mine. I paid a little of 10K on my lx450 locked front and rear with 122K miles on it. Prices tend to be rather high on LC's in utah just due to family size and suv's in general hold there value rather high in this reigion. This was after months of searching researching. For reference there is a 40th anniversary edition in idaho right now with 89K they are firm on at $15K. Price is relative. As long as you think you are getting a good deal I would say go for it. You will always have the person who says I paid 5K for this and its worth 10K, or the person that gets screwed at the dealership for an extra 3K than it is worth. Just do a lot of research, see what they are selling for on ebay, and BUY ONE ALREADY. I LOVE OURS SO FAR!!!!

For what it is worth I live in southern Ca and paid 14k for my 97 locked and fully loaded with 132k miles. It was second owner mainly a trip vehicle with no daily driving and the guy was meticulous with maintenance. It also happend to be the exact color I hoped for (white with grey interior). Around here that is a little high but for me it was worth it because I plan on owning it for a very long time and wanted a well maintained cruiser more than I wanted a deal. Like said by others, I think it comes down to finding one that you are comefortable with.
