(I know this is not the parts wanted section and I have posted in the parts wanted section.)

With the above out of the way ... I 'm looking for a full floater axle for my 60.

Not long ago, I managed to break the short side axle shaft in Moab. Had to leave my Cruiser overnight on the trail while I hunted for parts.

I was not being a yahoo or taking chances, it was just a 27 year old vehicle's day to break an axle. That made me think, I was lucky to not be too far from town at the time of breakdown. I would have hated life, if I was a couple hundred miles from anywhere!

.
With a full floater, I could have driven off the trail.

I am taking a road trip this summer and I am willing to pick up a reasonably priced Full Floater Axle anywhere between Southern California and Seattle and even Vancouver and points in between.

If you have one for sale, please let me know.

Thanks and if the Moderator deems this tread inappropriate and needs to remove it, I understand!

Call Marv at Spector he should have one, for about 600. 818 882 1238

I have not yet called Spector, their website lists them at $900 plus $150 for the rebuild kit. I don't want spend quite that much. For 600, I might be interested. I'll check.

Update: Called Spector. Full Floater with gasket & bearing kit, no third member. $1,059 plus tax. Ouch! Hence the shout-out to my MUD brethren!

Hen's teeth.

And FWIW whatever you find, add another $500 for rebuild, w/ bearings, probably new brakes, hardware, wheel cylinders, etc, rebuild the bell cranks, and finding a set of used spare axles...

And you'll need the spare axles, 'cuz if you think finding parts on the trail for the SF is hard.... I have a FF, so axe me how I know...

I bought mine from MAF about five years ago for $600. It was $1200 before I got it bolted up, including the spare axles, but not including the ARB :D

Would a spare set of SF axles have solved your trail problem ?

Hen's Teeth!! You're right!! I should keep that in mind when making obscure changes to the Cruiser!

I figured minimum $500 or more in additional costs just to get it from the garage floor to under frame. And yes, I will still need a set of spare shafts.

The funny thing about the breakdown in Moab was that there were plenty of spare 60 axles in camp, but no bearings. I had to drive to Colorado to buy an outer bearing.

(I see you have moved and from one porn capital to what appears to be another!)

Well, at least the FF bearings are the same as the front axle.....

Good luck

I had the same thoughts you did about a full float, I decided to just do a rear disc brake conversion. The caliper will hold the axle in just fine to get you off the trail since it usually brakes at the spline ( grant it you will have to be in a limp mode of sorts). Just my 2cents.

Ontharox,

I have to admit, Spike Strip's comments about "Hen's Teeth" have me wondering if the full floater is such a good idea. A friend has mentioned converting to disk brakes as an alternitive to a full floater also. Ontharox, what do you do about a parking brake?

Would it be better to just invest in a good modern pair of simi-float axle shafts?

I think I may pose this question on the 60 forum.
