I developed another pin hole leak in my tank on my 73. I recently had it cleaned and lined at the radiator shop but they do not warranty this type of procedure on a fuel tank. SO, question is, will JB weld hold up as a patch or what will?

THx

Purchase a new steel tank from Toyota....

:meh:

just spoke with local dealer and they want 400 bux for a new unit. ouch. Can CDAN get them cheaper?

Call him...

I have not ever paid 400.00us for an OEM 40 series tank....not even from Marv.

:meh:

Actually, the price was 399 bux but still too expensive. that was at 3 local dealers here in san antonio. Unless they are pricing it wrong but kinda hard to get all 3 to do that.....

thx shark

About the worst case scenario I can think of for a fuel tank hole would be in a chain saw or another high revving device. The reason I mention that is, my brother who logged in Montana for twenty plus years fixed a 1/8 inch hole in a chainsaw tank with JB Weld about ten years ago.

It's still good.

$300 bones is a pretty good chunk of coin for a pin hole. Gum???

That's probably not the best fix, but then again you're not working on the space shuttle.

Turns out there are several holes in the tank. the JB weld didn't hold, tried some other 2 part epoxy stuff, that did't hold so, I guess I'm going to be looking for a new tank.

Sorry about your luck. :( In that case, I'd get an OEM unit.

But... FWIW, here's a Rocky Mountain Cruisers tank (poly) $199.00 and two others from CCOT.

Installation Tip: Do not over tighten gas sending unit to tank or leak will occur. If used with a Weber Carburetor then Line D (Return Line) will need to be closed off. Lines from the fuel separator to the charcoal canister and then to the intake manifold must be properly connected or tank may expand due to pressure and cause leaks.

**I am by no means endorsing either of these guys or their tanks. I just wanted to present you a few other options.

Hope you can get one at a decent price.

"Seal All"

When they were building the Alaska Highway the auto parts store was selling it by the case. The crushed
rock was tearing up fuel tanks like they were going out of style.
I patched a pin hole in my 40 tank in 1991 and it's still holding.
A buddy of mine glued his fuel pump back together in his 69 Chevelle with it and then drove home 300 miles through the Rockies. He then didn't bother replacing it till a week afterward.

It sets up when it's exposed to gas.

since it's not my DD i'd like to find a way to repair it. I put on some 2 part epoxy allegedly for fuel tank repair on Tuesday and checked it last night and when I put fuel in it it still seeped out through the epoxy. I pulled all of that off and put JB weld over a couple of the larger holes and it seems to be holding. Will check again this evening. I'll also check for the "Seal All" if the JB doesn't hold up.

Thx

The Poly tanks are good tanks to go with and the company that makes them will stand behind them. If you decide to go that route and replace your tank, remember not to over tighten the sending unit when you install it, it can cause your FJ to have gas smells inside.

The old tank had just too much rust and corrosion. I patched most of it using JB weld and it would hole for about 6 or so months but the crap that would come thru the fuel lines would clog the filter and I would have to clean that up about once a month. I ended up going with a new tank from the dealer.

Thanks for the quick reply. I had been really hoping I could patch mine somehow {money} but when I got it drained today and shook it I quickly came to the same conclusion you did. It sounds like an entire handfull of sand is in there!
regards, jason

pinholes are like fleas, if you find one.........
Replace tank. I got an OEM tank from Mudrak and it was reasonable priced.
