... on a recent cold winter evening... "So, Ive got to pull and replace the inline electric fuel pump in my engine swapped FZJ80. It's mounted to the drivers side frame - easy to get to, but...

I know when I disconnect the lines the fuel will siphon from the tank, what to do, what to do.

Hey, what if I use compressed air to blow the fuel back up the line into the tank - that will break the siphon and keep it from leaking while I work on the pump fittings. Cool, great idea Will".

Following this plan, I use my air nozzle to blow the fuel out of the line, can hear it bubbling in the tank. But, as soon as I release the pressure, the fuel comes pouring out about twice as fast as normal. Thinking that I didn't fully clear the line, and being a REAL MAN (knowing that all I need is MORE POWER), I give it a good long shot of 120 PSI air. Somehow the crinkling sound of the fuel tank expanding doesn't register with me. Until I release the air and end up with a veritable garden hose of fuel shooting out of the line - well past the front bumper. That's when my aged and feeble brain solves the problem: I FORGOT TO REMOVE THE FILLER CAP - and have pressurized the tank! Now I'm trapped under the truck trying to hold back the flood - much like the little Dutch boy.

Fortunately, my wife heard my cries for help and came to the rescue.

Moral of this story - remove the cap before you blow the fuel back out of the lines - and you may avoid a diesel bath!

Happy Wrenching!

I got something else for you to try.

I adapted the end of my shop vac to fit the fuel tank filler. Turned on the vac and R&Red my fuel pump. The only diesel I got on me was the fuel that came back at me from the motor end of the fuel line. I guess I could have cracked open a fuel line just before the injection pump and sucked the diesel in that part of the line back to the tank, but didn't think of it until too late.

Gas is much more volatile than diesel is so I don't think it would be a good idea to do this with a gasser. Also, it might be better with diesel to do this with a bit less than a full tank.
