I havent started my FJ60 in a while due to needing to finish up some projects. I put a brand new Optima battery in it, drained and replaced the fuel, and a new fuel filter. I noticed that when I crank the engine its not sputtering or acting like its getting fuel and the fuel filter has zero fuel in it.

This picture is after cranking it three times for about 10-15 seconds each time.

I’ve already got a new fuel pump from O’Reilly but before I install it I thought I’d ask if the sending unit actually sends fuel to the pump or if it just transmits a signal for the fuel gauge? If it does push fuel to the fuel pump should I replace both anyway?

Thanks in advance!

The fuel pump lever arm sits on the camshaft and as the camshaft spins it actuates the lever to pump fuel to the carb. I don’t know about the sending unit but the pump is what delivers the fuel. If you have a compressor, you can take off the fuel cap and disconnect the hose from the fuel filter and blow some air into the hose towards the tank. You should hear air coming through the open fuel cap area. That should take care of any clogs in the lines. Then to check the fuel pump, you can disconnect the fuel line at the carb, get something to collect any gas for if the pump works and turn the engine over, check of gas is coming out the line. I’d check it this way in case you have a clog in the little filter inside your carb and it’s not letting gas pass. I’ve never experienced this myself, but it’s easy to disconnect the line and check. Then if no gas, replace the fuel pump with a Toyota one. I think this is one of those things where you actually want to use an OEM part. At least I would. Don’t forget to use the spacer between the pump and engine.
