I am in the process of installing a factory fuel pump into my fj60. The guy I purchased it from installed a junky electric fuel pump and in the process removed the return line and I can't seem to figure out what to do with the return port on the new pump. I've looked in the fsm, searched here on mud, and looked for diagrams on SOR but can't find anything helpful. If someone could tell me where the return line is supposed to go from the fuel pump that would be great. Thanks!

I cant tell you which port on the fuel tank..but the return line runs along the passenger frame rail.....from the fuel pump back to the fuel tank. I believe thats right...unless it gets hosed up with the emission crap...

^ What he said ^.

The feed & return lines are side x side. Find where the feed line ends on the frame and changes to rubber hose to the filter. The frame mounted return line will be right there next to it. Run 3 feet of rubber hose from frame line to return port on pump

I think the return line is the aft of the two next to each other. The smaller one (without the hose), sepatate from the two feed lines, is the vent. Could someone please confirm?

Perfect! Thanks for the help! I got it all put together and it runs soooo much better with the mechanical pump than it did with that electric pump. :cheers:

I'm going through the same thing...anyone have pics that they could post - I'm a visual learner - and challenged at that. Only a simple input and exit on the current electric pump. Three ports on the mechanical. I gather one is the return line which runs back to the tank, with vapor or excess fuel I presume...I want to be confident I'm hooking the right hoses to the right parts.

To clarify what I'm asking;
There are two tubes coming out of the top of the mechanical pump, and one coming out laterally from the front of the pump. I believe the fuel coming from the tank goes to the filter and then to one of the tubes on the top of the pump. From there fuel comes out of the pump through the lateral/front tube and up to the carb.

That leaves the second tube on top....is this the return line going back to the tank, or does it go to the charcoal canister nearby?

The line with the wire tie is the return line and plugs into the hardline closest to the firewall.
The other comes from filter and plugs into hardline that is towards front.
The hardlines run along frame from back and stub up near firewall and are hose from there to fuel pump.

I just purchased my first land cruiser, an 85 fj60, three days ago. Stock everything. BUT, the PO installed an electric fuel pump (incorrectly) and my first trip with the truck was to a mechanic who fixed the install. My question is whether I have already screwed up the truck by having an electric pump installed?

If it runs good for you then go w/ it. You’ll know if not or it bugs you ie: noise, ect.
Swapping back to a mechanical pump isn’t a big deal. We can walk you thru it if necessary.
