Howdy,

1980 FJ40 with stock mechanical fuel pump.

short version is just had some work done and the mechanic suggested swapping the holly carb for a Weber 32/36. Said it was running but needed a new fuel pump. He was running it with blasts of starter fluid. When I went to pick it up another guy (mechanic went fishing) was helping me load it up and he couldn’t get it started with starter fluid so we winched it onto my trailer.
I pulled the fuel delivery line going to the carb and it’s squirting in pulses (like it should?) but there doesn’t seem to be any fuel getting to the carb.

I tried starter fluid, nope. I dribbled some gas in there and nope. I replaced the hoses and cleaned out the line from the pump to the carb.
Filter is new, clean and filled with gas.

thoughts?

thanks,
Ian

Sounds like you need a new mechanic. Everything is pointing to a carb problem, not fuel pump. I would check to see if you perhaps have some debris blockage in the carb preventing fuel delivery.

Shop is The Landcruiser specialist in Austin.
I too am thinking there is blockage in the carb.

pulsating squirting is about right for the fuel pump though, right?

Someone smarter than me should have the answer for squirting versus flow. But it sounds like there’s no fuel getting into the carb, but even then it should at least start with starter fluid. When it was running, is there fuel visible halfway up the sight glass on the carb?

Pull the top off of carb and clean the smutch. especially the needle and float. My .02

I pulled fuel filter out of the carb and there was definitely some gunk in there. Pulling the top half now just trying to get the choke linkage apart…

will report back.

Yes, for the stock (or any other) mechanical fuel pump.

Well, pulled the top off the carb and cleaned all the jets and floats etc… wasn’t really bad in there at all. It’s a brand new carb ffs. Still won’t start with starter fluid or gas for that matter. Doesn’t really smell like gas after I try to start it but some is definitely getting in there.

would the vacuum port(s) or advance have any bearing? It certainly tries to start sometimes but I still feel it’s not getting fuel….

any ideas?

thanks for the input thus far…

Is it firing off with starter fluid but not running?
If it isn't at least firing with starter fluid shot down the carb then you might have other issues like distributor or igniter.

That’s what I’m wondering. The igniter is new as are the plugs and wires. I’m about to dive into the distributor but it’s curious that it was running at the shop and not here.

no, it’s not firing off starter fluid.

Could your mechanic have not tighten your distributor and it has turned, throwing off your timing? If it's getting gas, spark, and air at the right time she should fire.
I feel your frustration. I was battling hard start problems a couple of weeks ago on my '75. I rebuilt the carb, blew out the fuel lines, and put in a new filter. She fires right off now.

That’s a really good point. I’ll take a look at that in the morning after I try to get him on the phone.

thanks for the advice.
I really do appreciate it…

am I the only one who has issue with a shop letting a rig leave its shop in this condition?

You are not…
I just got off the phone with the mechanic and he’s going to make a house call to make this right.

Honestly, and I’m not making excuses for him at all here, but I think he was a wee bit focused on going fishing for the weekend. I hope he makes good on this as it’s a reputable shop that other land cruiser owners I know well and trust highly recommended…
We shall see.

@Pighead, OP said it has a Holley now.

Hopefully the house call will sort this out.

Haha at the boat payment, perhaps he has.

I agree it's something other than the pump. I see why people hate on webers, but I'm definitely not a weber hater. They're just finicky is all.

Still won’t start with starter fluid or gas for that matter.
Then I would check to make sure you have a well-timed spark. You can set static timing with eyeballs.
And how much gas are you dribbling in? Might take more than you think.
