fuel gauge sending unit-safe to use? (1 Viewer)

Hey guys, I removed my fuel gauge sending unit to clean my tank out. When I pulled it out, the little cover that goes over the inert of the sending unit is missing, should there be a cover?. Is it safe to use? or am I going to blow myself up?

Let's see if I can do this right on the pic. The inert I'm talking about is where the wires attach to. I thought there is a cover around the mechanism.
