I have tried two auto parts stores that did not have a fuel filter for my 40 and that it has been discontinued? Where have you guys gotten them or what else are you using?

What year are we talking? There's a variety of OEM filters, depending on the engine. And there are alternatives

1. Toyota still stocks them all. I do too.;)

2. If you don't mind losing the anchoring strap that was stock on your 77[IIRC, that was your year] you can use pretty much any inline filter.

3. If this sounds good to you, try asking for an FJ60 filter. That should be a lot more common to find aftermarket, and they are generally translucent enough to be able to check for debris. Not as easy to see as clear glass, but not as heavy either.

I got one recently at Napa, and inside was a Japanese made denso fuel filter that looked exactly like the OEM filter and came with the metal strap and everything.
