currently running a basic 15 gallon RCI aluminum sump setup, ahead of the rear axle and sitting in the bed of the FJ40....sumps face the rear....

looking to install a rear seat and the cell is VERY in the way....

plan is to install a RCI 2171A (30" wide, 17" tall, 7" front to back) with 17 gallons capacity and a pair of Walbro MP-13 pickups with a Y-fitting to connect them...

RCI
Auto Performance Engineering - Walbro fuel pick-ups

push the system to the back of the tub and leave plenty of room for a rear seat and some leg room...then modify the cage to protect the passenger (easy stuff) Rear seat is a 36" Corbeau bench

thots or comments? ordering parts in the next few days...'should' be a simple project....'should'

(hardest part is lowering the rear shock crossover....believe a cheap cut-sleeve will work for that tho :) )

Woody, a couple of thoughts:
(a) I once had a tank built that mounted vertically right inside the tail gate, went from wheel well to wheel well, and was almost the height of the tail gate. The tank only protruded about 6" forward towards my Con-Ferr rear bench seat, it equaled about 18-20 gallon, and left plenty of rear leg room in front of the bench seat.
(b) You obviously know about our 22 gallon nylon fuel cell that goes behind the rear diff, so I guess you are not opting for something like that???
(c) If you are using a rear tank with a stock tank as well, I can give you some real interesting plumbing options.

a> custom tank is an option, but 'off the shelf' will be cheaper....
b> my rear axle is already pushed back quite a bit with shocks, exhaust and other stuff in the way of any under-tub options
c> no stock tank anymore...rig is WAY past making one of those fit ;)

it would be cool to have one that sat under the seats, but i guess you have Batteries and stuff under there..

My Rear Seats only leave about 5" of space, and thats where my tool bag, & Spare parts sit.. Where do you keep all that stuff?

i thought you Retiring the Raisin Soon?

I just installed the that tall skinny tank on my 4runner with an external pump. The tank appears to be made well. I do have some concerns regarding fatigue cracking with the aluminum. There just is not a poly tank that meets this dimensional criteria. I mounted it on rubber pucks and am crossing my fingers.

On these tanks and just about any fuel tank,

DO NOT USE THE TABS, use some sort of strap to hold them down. I know of at least three people that have broken the tabs off of their tanks..

Strap them down, the tanks will last a lot longer.

my current alum tank is mounted using the 4 tabs to what's left of my tub, and hasn't had a single issue yet....

this one will be better mounted tho, working on ideas now....

X2. Even on tube buggies, I've seen the AL ones leak.

You are honestly the first person I know of whose didn't leak when mounted like that. Maybe the little bits of your tub aren't twisting with much force anymore?

I honestly HATE my poly cell. The top is all bowed in, the sides are bowed out, but the damn thing doesn't leak... so I'm hanging onto it for now.

Maybe I'll have a local guy make me a .120 wall diamond plate cell and just transfer the fittings and stuff all from my current cell.. :D

Oh, by the way, the Walbro pickups have been working VERY well for me.

Sum of the J##p guys I wheel with have been running that set up for several years with out a problem . If you want to run a rear seat that is about the best way to go . Definitely use straps not the tabs.

Woody where are we on this lil' project Sir?

no updates yet?

This past weekend I manage to mess up the gas tanks on my 40.

it's been a long project. if it's not one thing is another. I am trying to fix something and then something else breaks but I rather this happen here in the shop and not on the road or on the trail.

I was trying to set up the tank and putting the cover on it and it did not fit. After some persuations the tank was fitted.

...and 30 minutes later I had a gas leak.

Somehow I managed to puncture the gas tank with some bolts I had left there and missed them while cleaning the area.

The gas tank seems like it had been previously repaired .

At this time, I am seriuosly considering replacing my tank w/ a fuel cell and putting it in the back.

I am putting a YJ seat in the back for my lil' ones.

I am interested on your project on how it looks and how much space you will have left.

....kind of following your footsteps.

Anyway sir! why the lil seat? Clutchee fits just fine on the front one he! he!

fuel cell: ordered today
pickups: ordered today
lap belts: ordered today

need to get my bender attached to the shop floor today and get some more ideas/measurements made...not starting on it until July tho, planning to wheel the truck this weekend and won't be around all of next week.

if I owned the bender, yea...but it's not mine...long term loan...someday I'll have one....

im with mace on the strap idea. how many times that heap of yours been on its head already? wouldn't it suck to have your tab bolted fuel cell shear off a tab while it was bolted under your arse as you were rolling over for the 29th time.

that 85 octane would likely cause chemical burns to the mucosa of your anus-never tried it-im just saying...

Woody's rig is "loose" enough at this time that it probably is not a problem ;)

Yup, I've seen that before. Definitely strapping them down is the way to go.

I'm adding a fuel cell to my rig and I'm thinking about running a smaller (maybe the size of a soda can) cell that has some kind of low pressure recirculation pump. That way it'll be much harder on steep inclines/declines to starve the motor of fuel because the fuel level will much "higher" in the little cell.

Kinda the same idea as "bowls" on carbs.

That would be called a surge tank. Works pretty good. Nice if you can put the pump in that tank too for cooling.

Woody's rig hasn't been on it's lid in a while compared to a while back when he would flop pretty regularly. I drove it this weekend. It's stupid stable. The whole truck just pisses me off.

Woody, I've got the RCI 30x9x12 (top middle tank in the link). I've been happy with it. Since you're replacing the pickups anyway you may want to go ahead and replace all of the pickup line in the tank. My rig sat for a few months and when I began to tear it down for the new build I found this. I'm not sure it's a common occurrence or not.
