hey guys,

So i've had some mildly leaking knuckles for a couple of months, topped the diff up once, didn't take too much and just hoped to do the axle seals come the spring.

Long story short, right outer bearing failed and now I need to know what can be salvaged and what needs to be replaced. I've included a link to pics of my hub and birf. will the birf be compromised if reused? I'm sure the inner part of the hub is toast just curious if it wouldn't be wise to use the outer.

Appreciate your comments and opinions,

Bummer.

From the pictures (174 and 175), I don't see much damage to the hubs other than the bearing races need to be pounded out and replaced, which you would do that anyway on a birf service. Spindles and birf are obviously shot. How do the axle shafts look and the splines that mate into the differential?

Dayum!!

Well, looks to me like you need at least (besides the bearings of course) a new spindle, the locknuts, and maybe a new wheel hub. The Birfield is a maybe, it's pretty chewed up, but will still work. Not as strong as it once was, though.

the spindle is toast, i had a hell of a time removing the thrust washer, the groove for the tab was pretty warped. the locknuts seem okay, they threaded on to the other side fine (wanted to see if the thread was damaged). I guess my biggest concern is the hub. I'm learning as i go i don't wrench much, you think the bearing races are still in there? I'd like to use the birf again if it isn't too weak, i don't wheel hard, yay/nay? thanks again.

The races look like they are still in there to me. The birf would seem ok. From th epics I'd say that a new set of bearings and a spindle and you'll be in business.

Check the splines at the birf/drive flange area. When a knuckle wobbles around that much those can take a beating. You can do this by checkin for rotational play between the two.

Agree with landtank. That is best case...worst case is you need a birf as well. You can obtain those used if the budget is an issue.

appreciate all the input guys. maybe i'll get a new birf and keep this damaged one as a spare. thanks.

Pound the races out with a drift and make sure the mating surface is not scored. If you put it together and it still wobbles like a tire out of balance then you know you need the hub as well.
