That inner axle looks bad and feels worse. That kinda friction would generate heat. Finally caved on a cheap compressor. This degreaser seems to be working well. Bucket, gloves and brushes oh my.

Short side locking hub came out in pieces, hopefully just reassembled wrong. But does that mean excessive wear on the outer axle because it was perpetually locked?? Stay tuned...

That could very well be the case. If one of those springs is not installed exactly right, it does not unlock. Let us not ask how it is that i know that.

Check out my bead blast cabinet! Rubber tub and a shower curtain.
ALWAYS use eye protection, good gloves and a filtering mask cuz I'm old and don't like pain nor impairment.
And YES , that is correct code freeborn red.

With daily rains, my project is going slow... getting things cleaned up.
Wish I had used brass to drive out the races in the hub...

Got the old rotors off by pulling the 2 retaining bolts and then using the old lugnut on the end of the lug and driving them out with 20 oz hammer. Set it on a piece of wood. will take out the hub lugs to paint.

Cleaning the rust off the spindle.

Almost have one hub ready to paint, but I'm going to be held up by a lack of glass beads...

Yikes!
I think these CV joints are shot... can you guys tell me what you think?
The inner races both have grooves worn in as do both housings

Races are pressed in, rotors eventually all the way on. These rotors did not have the two screw holes for the retaining screws. Told that this design deletes them. Says so on the box too.
Used a rented bearing press set from oreilly to seat the races and grease seal.

It was a 🤬 getting those lugs in there. Eventually resorted to a washer and lug nut to pull them, or the ones that were not cooperating

Pulled all the studs out of the knuckles... many were LOOSE so will clean and loc tite in.
I've got to bead blast and paint the knuckles but we have been raining daily...

A lot of pitting. Painted.

Lesson learned... cover the whole opening to keep glass beads and dust from hiding in every nook and cranny internally. A lot of brake cleaner, eye protection and blowing air.

Loosened my stuck lug.
Must have caught a burr half way in, it damaged the threads. Tossing the lug and tapping the knuckle to clean the thread. Of course i don't have that size and neither does my neighbor with his standard-only set.

12 x 1.5 is knuckle thread
12 x 1.0? on the top of the lug

Once i complete that i will be ready to start the teardown on the 40.
Cooler week ahead...

I think i have everything i need. My donor knuckle was missing the "wiper" bolts on the back... i wonder if the wiper bolts in the 40 will fit???? Can't imagine they reengineer that detail for 83. Not worried.

Stage 1 nearly complete. Assembling parts and kits, cleaning and rebuilding donor items, blasting and cleaning, painting... chasing rattlesnakes

Driver side tear down.
What a mess!
Rusty old brake lines, the upper bearing was stuck on the inner race for the tip steering arm but i happily don't need to deal with that. It all comes off.
All new stainless brake soft lines to go in.
