Looking for best years for axle swap for my 1971 fj40. Looking for fine spline and disc brakes.

If you are talking about swapping the whole axle including the housing, it sounds like a lot of effort for a downgrade at diff.

If you are talking about knuckles out, any of the minitruck and FJ60s are good. I believe the magic year for FJ40 is 78 when they went to the "normal" length birfields.

Jan 79+ is the larger bolt pattern and the normal birfs
