HOW TO: Insert Axle Shaft into Birfield

I've seen a few posts about people having issues getting the axle shaft into the birfield, so I took a few pics of the way I did it. I found this method in several postings, but I didn't see any pictures.

1) Put a zip tie very tightly around the c-clip
2) Start the axle shaft into the birf
3) Pick up both pieces and knock the end of the birf down against the ground. The momentum of the shaft will carry it down into the birf quickly enough for the circlip to pass easily into the birf.
4) Cut off the zip tie if it doesn't break off in the process.

Worked like a charm on both sides. I tried using a hose clamp, but that method didn't work for me.

I came up with that one years ago, it works really well! I don't have an 80 anymore but cheers for posting up pics. Easiest way BY FAR of seating an axle into a birf!

Do I need to rub gasket sealers in between gaskets...I tried to search on this thread but no mention of gasket sealrs.

Halfway There....but

This is equivalent to Junk on the Bunk in the Marine Corps....for inpection. I need somebody's expertise on the nick seen on the Axle shaft end...this goes into the housing. Apparently the pounding did its toll and may have caused the clip to nick on the axle end. as you can see..

Pls don't tell me I something I would not want to hear.

thanks all for this thread.:bang::whoops: I don't know

More LC porn Inspection

See what Goober did to the axle lock nuts and washer thing-ma lock...No proper tools and the play in there was very noticable. This thing has 190,000 miles and looks like this is her first time with a gentle fellow.

Ooops

Forgot to upload...the 100 degree heat today in Bakersfield, CA sort of fried my brain:banana:

I would just clean any burr of it with a fine file, you will be ok, uh do you live in a nasty neighbourhood? that is a different tool than i used when i did my front axle!

Cheers P ;)

Thanks...BTW, the knuckle arm on the passenger side should be orientated short end front? Correct. Oh, that tool...it is a great tool for anything. :)

Finally getting around to this, and I have a question

Why does the flat spot on the birf need to be at 12 o'clock? I rotated and slid the drives side out easy, and the pass side feels like it will slide right out too, even though it is at about 5 o'clock. I've got the front dif locked, and it is tough to rotate the axle (I have to stick a screwdriver in the u joint to get enough leverage to turn it. Not sure if that is a good idea.) Also, if I rotate the drive shaft to align the pass side, how do I know how far to rotate it back to get the drivers side reassembled. Does it matter?

Also, anyone else have their ABS sensor break on the way out?
