The next day, the manifold was off. No broken studs or rounded nuts.

Had to stop because I forgot to order replacement exhaust manifold studs! That's just some rust converter I sprayed on the surface rust.

So, the next day I jumped on the intake side. There was oil leaking out of the intake manifold seals. That must have been before I put in an oil catch can (works like a champ). Kinda crusty. New seals will be used once I clean things up.

The other reason for removing the intake manifold was to get better access to the injection pump. I'm installing a boost compensator to better manage fuel delivery under boost.

Used a couple of cans of brake cleaner on the oily mess. It's a whole lot better looking in person.

That's it for now. Will move on to the oil feed next. I'm going to tee off the oil pressure gauge to feed the turbo.

Awesome work as always. Betty is gonna fly.

Weekend update. Got new studs and gaskets on and tried to install the turbo and manifold assembly (fawking heavy) and quickly found out that the wastegate actuator hit the engine mount. 😡
I needed to figure out how to move the actuator up and away from the engine mount.

First attempt was to make a simple bracket. That didn't work, the damn actuator bracket was now interfering.

So, had to do something else. I ended up fab'ing a new bracket out of plate and a square tube. Painted it with some pimp gold paint (poor man's cad plating)

Did a fit check and now had interference with the compressor housing and the metal shield on the motor mount. The grinder took care of that!

I managed to get 30 minutes in the shop tonight. I used a tee from Mambatek to tee off of the oil pressure sender location. Along with a braided house from Mambatek, this will supply oil to the Holset turbo.

The next step on the project was to drop the pan, burn in an oil return line, and swap in some new BEB's.

One of the old crank bearings. All 6 pairs (top and bottom) hardly had any wear on them, but I am glad I did the swap.

Time to clean the oil pan. I used a wire wheel on my drill and went to town. The brake cleaner helped, too.

While I had the pan off, I wire wheeled it and treated the surface rust with some rust converter and then painted it Dark Machinery Grey (easier to see leaks and that was all I had on hand).

Forgot to add, I used standard sized Taiho bearings and also Plastigaged them to see if they were in spec. They were!

Hopefully, I will be able to install the pan this week and get her running. Still have some big things left like air intake piping, gauges installed in the dash, and exhaust.
