Fried crank seals on Stihl 28?

I was cutting with the grain on 36" D dry oak to make a bench with my trusty (20 yrs?) Stihl 28 AV 20" bar. I may have sucked in some chips because when I took a break the saw started smoking. After it cooled down it wouldn't start. I blew out all the ****, didn't see much. Many attempts: cleaned all passages in carburetor, replaced metering diaphragm, new plug. No Start. Has healthy spark, no gas smell on plug after cranking. Did kick once after a dozen pulls. Got copy of Stihl shop manual - testing crankcase leaks requires several custom jigs which I suppose I could build, but..
Rather than have the pros repair it I'd rather buy a new one for $400 since it was overheated.

Any suggestions?

Until D' Animal logs on, couple of questions;
Is the oiler working correctly, and how much junk was packed in the case?
Has it been stored with fuel mix in it?

The oiler was working fine, the saw had been run at least an hour in the week prior with no problems. It had been stored with Stihl fuel mix but the screen on the fuel line was clean. It was running fine with no noticeable heat or smoke until I shut it off to take a break. When I set it down smoke started coming out of the air inlet and did so for perhaps a minute. There was hardly any wood chips when I blew it out, nor did I see any ashes or obvious signs of where the smoke came from. During the subsequent cleanup I did notice that the fuel tank vent was almost clogged, but fixing that didn't help.
