Has anyone here mounted free air subs into the rear door of their 70? On the passenger side, the larger of the two rear swing doors? Any idea how much metal would need to be cut? Thanks. I have already done up custom door panels to house some deep 6.5" mids (RE Audio XXX6.5), and am looking to see if I can get some quality bass without giving up too much room in the back. Thanks!
Iv looked into it on my 74
The large rear door contains a LOT of support structure for the spare tire mount, if you want to still use the rear spare its a no go, although probably would be a good place to mount the business end of a HAM radio.
Now the smaller of the two doors DOES have enough room to mount a shallow mount 10" pioneer. However it has nowhere near enough cubic cm if you wanted to fab a fiberglass enclosure; BUT I think you could get an 8" in there and still have sufficient room to build a proper box.
As for free air subs you may be able to squeeze a 10" in the big door with minimal cutting but im not a big fan of free air. Now perhaps using the door itself as part of a box may be possible with proper matting and sealing however my bet is it would sound like s***.
Other than that I think 2 sets of these: MMC690 Car Audio Speaker from Polk Audio on a 4ch 700W+ marine amp with good boxes in the side panels will make buckets of low end,
PS from my investigation pioneer shallow mounts are the most water resistant shallows out there, so if your rig gets dirty and wet often this is probably the way to go.
Thanks for the info, appreciate that! I have been looking into this, I have a pair of Elemental Designs 10" shallow subs that work well in as small as .3 cubes per sub sealed, I might build a combo sub/tool box for behind my seat instead. I do not want to cut out the support for the spare, and I know what you mean about free air being a bit of a crapshoot. Will post up pics soon. I also have an extra set of vinyled door panels that I did up for the truck the first time around, but I built them too big and the door sills were catching on them. I will be giving them away, along with the matching vinyl 8" spacers if people want to run 8's in their doors.
