From one day to the other a good friend of mine decided to stop with the 40,70 and 80 series, together we have had all the 40 series (about 27) on the island over the years and saved over the years all collected parts of the junk 40's that were available.
He asked me If I could pick up all the parts that he had and if I was interested in his 1984 FJ40 FST that he had for years and always wanted to restore. This FJ40 had not been on the road sinds 2002, after that the PO owner let to repair the engine completely at the dealer, it hadn't been on the road and ran much after.

I tried to convince him not to stop, he would regret it, it didn't work

Over the years most of the FJ40 here on the island changed from 1st owner to the next owner and the next owner and etc etc etc.........and the next one that in the end found the way to destroy it.

As my sweetheart had said that the FJ40 1976 was going to be hers, that one was taken now so I had lost my chance on a shorty to make the bloodline 40,43,45 complete.

"new" engine, perfect frame, but with a "new build" full tub on it, it would be a close "new" beach cruiser or

maybe I would have leave it and make it like this one

The engine started up immediately and ran like a charm. The frame was excellent only the body beyond repair full with lots of bondo and sheet metal over sheet metal over sheet metal and steel studs and angles etc.

Before 2002 there were already done a lot of repairs, why cut out the old rust, just put a new plate over and follow the form

Would be really curious of model on this 84. While it has a insert dash it doesn't have many of the late 40 series options like the dome light switches on the A pillars. From the mid seventies the B pillar soft top bow had a dome light. Windshield washer that started with the 78 model isn't there. The one that surprises me it the 1/79-9/82 inspection cover and hump. Seen many FJ45s and HJ47s that never had a five speed option with the 10/82+ inspection cover and hump. Thought Toyota made one RHD and one LHD cowl. Having a insert dash would mean it wasn't a earlier cowl being used up. It does have the split transfer case with crossmember supporting the transmission? Hand brake on the rear axle? I see it has the late LHD glovebox door, does it have a collapsing steering column? Not sure what markets besides North America if any got that column. It does sound like a fun project. Wish I could find an 83/84 in similar condition here in the US.

What was ordered to be made new was, a full Tub, 2 front doors, a window shield, the soft top frame with rear doors and the soft top

Here are the doors that are ready

So is the picture in the upper post the current state of your 84 or is it closer to the picture in the lower post?

Are the replacement tub, windshield, doors and bows being made locally on the island or coming from Columbia? If that isn't your new tub (cowl looks like a different cruiser) I would get one with a transmission hump made like this

to make it easier to add one of these later.

Practicing Social Distancing here. Biggest concern here is the trespassers on the property.

The old REO Speedwagon song pretty much sums up our approach to Covid 19, "Riding the Storm Out".

@Living in the Past , you have me thinking, already have a FJ43 with a 5 speed, but maybe it's a good idea to do this one also

Well COVID19 got in the way, waiting for a tub and lots of other goodies from oversees where also everything is also on "lock-down"

I just wanted to have to do something

So let to pick it up the overgrown 84 at the body shop, not allowed, but if we make it a fast action who would know

We made it and knowbody got infected !

Brought it closer to home and I wanted to do a "Rattle Can Job" just for the time being till the tub etc arrived

Hammerite has an Almond color that looks on the cap like Dune Beige 416, in reality it is much more egg white color

So I decided to take another color on the outside and leave the Egg Shell color inside.

It's close finished, and since we are out of lock down it's time to go back to normal and wait till the tub comes in !
