First post here, am just now starting my research and potential quest. From my internet travels, this forum seems to be the one most frequented and one with the most knowledge base for FJ40's.

I had a '72 FJ40 in the early 90's that had been rolled. It didn't have a hardtop, but no rust, non synchro 3 spd etc. I eventually sold it for $4500  I had an Arles Blue '97 D90 SW as well. That was great rig. It had the usual corrosion problems, water intrusion through the rear floor seam and some other less than stellar construction issues most D90's have. I had to sell the D90 back when we started having kids in '02.

Now several years later I'm looking to buy a FJ40 in good shape, preferably a '79-'83 with some owners history and documentation. Of course I'm looking for the least amount of rust I can find, but if it's a good candidate I wouldn't mind replacing a minor amount of rust. I'd shy away from anything diamond plated or rhino lined for this reason. I want to see what I'm buying rather than discovering rust later that had been concealed. I can't say I'm too fond of V8 conversions and would prefer the original engine and gearbox. I'd like to find one that hasn't been modded or messed with too much, as well as one that has been taken care of by all of its owners. That doesn't mean I'm looking for an auction garage queen. I'd prefer it not be actually as I want to use it. 33's, a mild lift, winch etc is about the extent of any mods I'd do to it myself. I'm open to colors but not all of them. I'm admittedly fond of the blue ones though. I'd be using it for less than extreme trails in the Bend, OR back country, dirt bike camping and possibly towing behind a RV.

I spoke to a guy named Greg from Vintage Offroad. Seemed like a nice fella on the phone and had some great info. He's a consigner though. That isn't necessarily bad imo, but I've always bought my used cars from the owner himself, who you can speak to and evaluate. I also found a site for a guy who does extensive restoration in Lincoln City, OR. His name is Scott Gesik and he looks to have a good operation going for himself. I'd likely speak to him (since I live in the vicinity) if I find one needing some work. I'm sure anything I find will need attention.

Pricing these FJ's I've found are a bit tricky right now. It sounds like they had a run up in price a few years back but have since settled down? So I'm conscious of this. I don't mind spending the money on one, so long as the value of potentially paying a premium is there later on. I've been looking at first gen Broncos as well, although it seems like the vast majority of them are rusted up and clapped out.

So if there are any leads on a '79-'83 in good shape for a guy who lives in the Pac Nw, I'd appreciate the contact.

Thanks...

Search Greg Muchro on this site, and your opinion will likely change. I don't want to slander him, and I don't have any first hand knowledge... However many others have posted their opinions of Greg.

your best bet for a clean later model truck might be one of the columbian ones coming in

if you're not looking for a restored later model.. maybe one of the desert trucks? (UAE or Saudi)

I think you'll be looking a long time for a fairly rust free later model truck from the USA that isn't way over priced and way over rusted.

Assuming you want a 79-83 because of the "creature comforts". I'm using that term lightly because these are fj40's after all. You may want to consider a 76,77 or 78 also. Disk breaks, power steering and either factory air or vintage air added. Might be an easier find and there are some nice ones available.

PM sent.

There are some out there but they are few and far between for the type of vehicle you are looking for. As others have said, the condition and price are probably going to be a problem. Be patient and keep looking but as stated you may also want to broaden your scope of vehicle to give yourself a better chance at finding something for you.

Good luck.

Also post this up in the Wanted or search the For Sale forums here on IH8MUD

I don't care too much in finding one with AC nor PS. I definitely want a 4 spd w/ the higher diff gears and the larger engine. Front discs would be nice too. I suppose I could open up the years I should be looking for as the diff gears shouldn't be a problem in switching out. I'm not really concerned about the collectability of these rigs either so your advice is appreciated.

I have a rust free 1978 getting painted right now. Mine was late enough it has "fine spline" axles. Swapping in 3.70 gears from a FJ60 was simple/inexpensive. It's a bit more involved but still doable in earlier years.

Power steering and A/C didn't start in the 40 series until the 79 model in the US market. Prior to 79 any power steering or A/C would have been installed after it left the factory.

The 79-83's harder to find, but they're still around and deals can be had. Just be patient and have plenty of cash on hand!

Are you on the coast, or in the Portland or Medford metro area? Year model and smog equipment still left on the Cruiser can make a difference depending on the area you are in.

@overton, who's a member of this forum has a few:

Inventory

The ones on his site are the kind that fits your description - basically the kind I (and probably most people) like.

He has some real nice ones for sure. The blue '83 he has would be perfect for me but I suspect since it's on Ebay it's probably really spendy. However, it's in CA at TLC but in the pics it has Alaska plates. Alaska is a really harsh environment for spend a few decades it for a truck.

The white one he has w/ 7K documented miles is just insane. Great reference pictures on that one.

The '83 will be spendy for a lot of well deserved reasons. That's the last model year for the U.S. market, and only 300 were imported. On top of that it's got the coveted factory A/C and power steering.

We got them till 84 north of 49th

74+ will get you what you're wanting.
F motors get somewhat better economy... Very similar in power.
Disc fronts 77+
