...if you were able to get the check valve through the grommet, did you use magic? Lube? Your brain? The strength of 10 men?

I lost the battle, threw all my tools and put the old check valve in with the new hose.
 
I don't recall anything complicated or difficult about the process. Is your brake booster OEM?
 
I'm really not sure if it's OE since I bought it with 199k miles on it years ago. The grommet fits nice and tight but the check valve is bigger than the one that came out(which was plastic).

The new check valve fits through the grommet out of the master, but once the grommet is installed, the check valve is too big.
 
Not sure what the OE check valve is supposed to look like

OEM boosters are painted, black.
 
It looks like you've got an aftermarket brake booster, so the hole might be different than OEM.
