Wife and I are looking at getting a set of 2 way radio's for us and the kids. Looking for something durable. Kid proof. So far we are looking at the motorola, uniden, cobra.... Whats the best brand to go with?

motorola followed by cobra then forget it. only the larger more expensive ones are durable.

just get the best set you can afford. motorola have them from $40 and up for a pair. Difference is wattage = range and security channels. the cheapest mini ones will work reliably for maybe 1 mile in the real world. the 1 or 2 watt models will do three or four miles or at least the ones aused for pricechecks at my local box store will work for 3 miles :D.

get GMRS, the highest watttage you can find (4W?) This will go supposedly over 10 miles.

I just purchased a set of Midland GXT500's, 5 watts of power and up to a 14 mile range. Haven't had a chance to use them in the back country yet.

Thats like what... 160 bucks to get both the wife and I licensed? I thought some of the lower wattage radios didnt require an fcc?
I want to get the best bang for the dollar without needing a license.

then FRS, no license needed. 2 miles.

FWIW, seems like nobody ever gets the license for GMRS, wrong as that may be...

I have had the Midlands for over a year - buttons don't work - poor quality - buying the Motorola - screw the license - less government = better country!
