Any reason to spring for a HD GM flexplate ($112) over a stocker ($40). 5.7 Vortec, 700r4, Atlas, 1 tons, 42" Iroks.

I think I asked this before but can't find it......
Looking at an Atlas 4spd's (10.34) and keeping the stock 4.11's in the axles for some streetability. With the 3.06 first gear in the 700r4 I'd be at 130:1.

How much stress does keeping the 4.11's put on the rest of the drivetrain? Would I be better off with 4.88 or 5.13 gears to keep from breakin' junk?

Thanks,
Mike

130:1 is way overkill for an auto, but way cool for going crazy slow. With that gearing, I'd keep the 4.11's, maybe get them treated.

If you have a 4 spd Atlas...why are you worried about a few more $'s for a flexplate? Might as well get the stronger one for peace of mind!

I would say the stock one is well up to the task unless you are going for crazy HP.

My Take on the rear end gear ratio is:

The lower the gear ratio the easier on Drive Train, Harder on Axle shafts.

The Higher the Ratio the Harder on the drive train.

i would go with a 2.0:1, 2.72:1, and 5.44:1 ratio's on the atlas for an Auto..

with 4.11 gears and 42" tires, you would be happy running it in 2:1 around town..

2.1 would be fine for cruising around town, and blasting easy sections of trail

2.7 better for slower crawling, and 5.4 for the nasty stuff
