I just picked up my FJ80 from Discount Tire after having Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac 33 12.50 15 installed. The cruiser looked like a monster and the tires are great looking. First thing was to drive it home to see if it fit in the garage and it did. City street driving was ok. Then decided to meet some buds for a beer. Jumped on the toll way and could not believe how slow my LC had become. I read several post regarding 33" tires and didn't get what I experienced. If you have an 80 and don't want to hit passing gear over every over pass, don't get 33s. Seriously, if this cruiser even thinks there is an incline it down shifts. Taking it back today to get 31 10.50s. I hope it makes a big difference.

Sounds like your engine could use a tuning... I put 33s on mine and haven't noticed a difference.

Yeah, I just had a bunch of work done at the Cruiser Shop in Dallas. Buddy did a killer job on the cruiser. Full tune up, valve adjustment and a ton of other things. It drove fine with the stock tires. Actually faster than i thought it would, especially after Buddy was finished with it.

X2! No problems here either. D

X2. No problems here either. Drove over 4000 miles since the upgraded tires without changing any gears.

I've got 285/75's on mine (about 32.8" or so I think) and the biggest change from the stock tires of off the line. On the highway, I cant say that I've noticed a difference at all...

No problem with my 33's and 500+ lbs of camping gear that rides around daily. As a FJ80 owner you need to come to the realization that they are rocket ships there more like a tractor/ work hores. Have you done a full tranny flush? It made a huge differents in my shifting.

dude i had 35's on my stock 94 when i got it with no lift or gearing. it still did ok. i have since gone to 285's which is a 33x11. i just took it on a 750 mile road trip and it did great the whole time. 80's arnt meant to be speed demons. take those tires off road. itl change your mind about going down to a 31. 31= poo poo

BTW my neighbor has a 92 with 33x12.5x15 and he does just fine as well.

Yeah I just had about $6000 worth of work done which included a transmission flush. Not sure what the deal is. I also dig as far as the tractor comment goes but dropping into passing gear on freeway over passes is crazy.

$6000 in maintence yikes! That thing should be running like a Swiss watch. Its getting hard to find 91 cruisers for 6k+...

I agree and it was until I put those Goodyears on it. It accelerated better and shifted better. Everything is tight and clean. Not sure what the deal is. I can't imagine living in the mountains with this. I would need a lot of turn outs just to stay out of the way.

That's just the nature of the things. Hills and freeways don't go well together, regardless of tire size.

just put 33s on my 92 3fe and havent noticed a difference.

If you just put $6000 in to a tune up for your 91FJ80 your NUTZ. I payed $2500 for mine and may have put $400 in to a tune up and she runs like a top with 186000 on the clock.

I hope you got the cruiser for free if you had to put 6000 in to her.

WOW 6k worth of work? what did you have done? that transmission flush should have been less than 100 bucks, so where did the rest of the 5,900 dollars go?? at any rate, i have the newer motor in my 96 but my 33's made nearly no difference at all in power, and actually ran better on the highway than my stock size tires.

Or you may wanna throw one of these on there (billet 6225 turbo) and get 380 WHP I bet you could throw 37's on there and still keep stock gears

I just drove through the mountains and canyons from Denver to Moab to Lake Powell and back with 285s on my truck and stock gears. I had no problem, but my truck does go into the "passing" gear quite often when going up the mountains to maintain speed and even then it doesn't maintain speed all that well. I'm not upset. Just realize that bigger tires make the truck perform worse on the road in just about every way. Why do you think low profile tires are such great performers for sports cars?

I had a tone of work done. Front end, belts hoses, radiator, water pump, brakes, etc. Its now like brand new and I hope to drive it for a long time.

$6000 worth though? For me that's a full baseline, front bumper, wheels and tires, axle service F+R, and could probably squeeze an aussie locker rear in with all of that too. That's a ton of money for maintenance, you're truck should run like a top and have no trouble with power w/ 33's. My truck has a ton of miles and after a full tune up runs like a champ.
