I have had intermittent issues with the starter and I’d like a second opinion here…

every so often the car won’t start. I have power but zero crank no click nothing. Ive already swapped out the fusible link And relay.

if I hit the starter motor with a small hammer it will start up again.

question: is this definitive proof of a starter being bad or could it still be something else going on?

It's proof that the plunger isn't plunging and/or the contacts aren't contacting.

Maybe it's just filthy. Maybe the contacts are worn unevenly. Maybe they weren't seated properly from the factory (happened on my rebuilt Denso).

Regardless, the problem is definitely inside the starter assembly.
