Any ideas about the occasional no start he mentions?
I would bet dinner it's the EFI Main Relay... very common on FJ80's. It's not so much that they fail, they're just finicky sometimes.
I always kept 2 in the glove box of my 91.
Symptoms are crank, no start (no fuel).
Quick diagnosis - when it's presenting symptoms, put the key in and turn it to "on" - all the dash lights should be lighting up. If the CEL doesn't light, it's the EFI Main Relay.
It's on the USDS of the engine bay, takes about 3 seconds to pop another one in. They're $15 new from the dealership, I grabbed a few out of the junk yard and never had an issue.
The FJ80 vs. FZJ80 debate has been beaten to death... with an FJ80 you'll never blow a headgasket, and never get a speeding ticket.
I manually shifted my A/T going up hills to keep speed and loved the 32's on mine. Not too much tire, but enough to do work.
It's much more of a tractor than an FZJ80. The only time I noticed lack of power was in hill climbs in a lot of snow, but the torque is great when there's a bit of traction.
Dain - are you regeared at all?
