OK the cassette radio in my 62 isnt' cutting it. I can't listen to my cd's. So what options do i have? Would a cd/cassette radio from a Fj80 fit perfectly into a 62? Or should i just ditch the radio, buy a cd player and a cb and install in the same slot?

another vote for the CD and CB. I put the CD player in and will soon do the CB right below. Also I got a cd player that plays MP3s so you can fill up a single disc with about 9 hours of music.

upgrade those speakers at the same time. the stock ones should be used up by now. the speakers made a huge difference in my truck.

Go to http://www.crutchfield.com and take a look at what they have to offer. Their "what fits my vehicle" tool works great, pretty much anything will fit in an FJ62. It comes down to features that you want, and how much do you want to pay.

This was my solution:

I have installed a 6 disk CD head unit and amp out of a 2000 to 2002 Toyota Tundra. I mounted the amp under the head unit. I been using it for a couple of years, work great (as great as it can be with the factory speakers). CDs never skip, I had the single CD in there first and it skipped a few times. Just plug the factory wiring into the amp and the amp into the head unit. The factory brackets fit on the new head unit, fits perfect int he factory opening. The amp was a little bit more of a challenge. I know there are better radios I just like the factory look.

I put in a radio from a Scion. Wiring and mount plugged right in, but had to dremel the bezel a bit (no mod to opening). Plays MP3's, they are on sale on ebay all the time.

A radio from a newer Tacoma/Tundra/100 will fit as well. Not sure what years have the same plugs but I know they do. A friend of mine got one of eBay for $50. Has CD and tape. No mods required.

I also have the Scion unit. I like it. It plays mp3's on disc and doesn't skip. The dash does need a little trimming, but the wiring plugs into the FJ62 harness.

I bought mine on ebay for $65. And I bought 4 speakers and an amp for another $35 (all Pioneer).

It's not competition good, but I like it.

I vote for the Tundra radio

In my 1988 FJ62 I had trouble with skipping CD's after installing an Avalon single CD player. I finally found a 6-disk Tundra radio with a small external amp. It works great - no more skipping and the display somewhat matches the rest of the dashboard lighting. It plugs right in the stock harness.

I also got a single disc Scion radio from eBay that works fine. I paid $100 w/ shipping included. However, I am now looking for the 6-disc Scion radio becuase I hate having to eject a disc everytime I want to hear something else.

Anything single or double din will fit. Crutchfield is a goot site for info. But Ebay has become my friend on all purchases, its just so darn cheap!! Research for the options you want and look them over on ebay for a few weeks to see what they are going for then bid.

Nothing fancy to the stock radio, stock speakers and head unit are rather sorry though overall.

how does the stock radio come out?

Look at Crutchfield's scratch and dent section. They may have some options for you and they have excellent customer service. They will even provide you with all of the wiring for free. You can even call them up and they will talk you through the install if needed.

Upgrade the speakers too. Go to a store and find the exact model you want and then Froogle it.

Get a deck that plays mp3 files. I have about 12 cds that holds over 100 albums of music. You will not regret it.

etronics.com has the best prices. i got a pair of 6.5in pioneer 220W for $54 including shipping.

pioneer has the best heads.

best buy will install a head for about fifty bucks. not very easy to install on a land cruiser.

A head unit is a 1/2  job. Not hard at all, take maybe an hour or less depending on you ability to follow instructions.

On the commenet about getting wiring for free, thats about $10

Only thing that sucks about Ebay is warranty stuff. I think I got stuck with a bad unit one time.

When you can get a complete system with anp, sub, door speakers, head unit and wireing for $200 shipped. Cannot be this price.

Here is the link to Scratch and Dent- http://www.crutchfield.com/S-EWtZWUCbuLi/cgi-bin/ProdGroup.asp?g=300&cc=07&avf=N

Crutchfield is not the cheapest, but you can call them and talk to them all day. Once you find one you like, then like I said, search Froogle for the best price.

I can only afford Crutchfield's S&D Products

edit- I second getting a deck that you can hardwire an iPod into. The transmitter is weak.

oh and MORE ON THOSE 3 BUTTONS KLF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!....please?

To remove the radio you have to pull the dash bezel loose. There are screws holding it in place. Make sure you find them all, some go in at different angles. You can disconnect the speedo cable from the speedo and move the bezel up enough to get to the four screws that hold the brackets for the radio in place. then you can move the radio out enough to unplug the two wiring connections and the antenna cable. The two backets on the sides of the radio should screw onto another Toyota radio. I know the head unit and amp from the 2000 to 2002 Tundra will work but it seems some of the other models have different wiring. I know my 2000 LC has the amp under the passinger's seat and the wiring going to it is not the same. On the Tundra's radio the factory wiring plugs into the amp and the amp has a plug that goes to the head unit. I installed a single disk CD head unit in my 89 first but it skipped a couple of times. Upgraded to the six disk CD unit and it has never skipped. Used the same amp on both units. Everything was just plug and play.

Forget it

Forget swapping in the CD player, buy an ipod, and an fm transmitter from belkin, you can pick up an ipod mount from walmart for another $10 and download your cd collection to your ipod, and you have your entire collection at your fingertips. Works great for me.

Fm transmitters are crap. They dont work well at all. If your gonna do the iPod thing get a head unit that can control it and charge it at the same time. wire the ipod into your glove box or center console. That way the ipod is out of site, and the head unit displays the song info as well.

I use a tape cassete adaptor over a fm transmitter in my cars that still have tape decks, sounds way better. I find that you have to turn your sound way up with transmitters.

Have fun whatever way you go, I love upgrading stereos.
