Hi

I have a 1988 FJ62. I live in South Africa. I would like to know if my engine can handle 95/97 unleaded petrol. LRP is being phased out and there are rumours going around that I NEED LRP.

I would appreciate an explanation of the answer to help with my research.

Thank you

Is a South African 62 carbureted? Keep in mind, here in the US we haven’t used leaded fuel for what, over 50 years? All our 60’s/62’s are ok.

Yes it is carburetted. Everything I have been reading is from the US. I guess the ones made over there are ok running unleaded. I'm just wondering if the ones made in non-US factories can handle unleaded.

all Landcruisers were made in non US factories,

Ah ok I didn't know that. Thanks. So would mine be made in the same way? I'm guessing they would. My concern is that people keep telling me I need to use lead replacement petrol (LRP) but we are discontinuing it here in SA. Everything I'm reading online, however, says unleaded is fine.

There are poverty spec 2F/3F cylinder heads that don't have hardened seat inserts. SOR was trying to sell them years ago as direct replacements for US spec cyl heads, but for less $$. Don't remember the casting number, but it was higher than our 61040. Maybe 050, 060?
Edit: it was 61070 that had iron seats.

Heads that could be on a Gen Spec FJ62:

11101-61050W/O(EEC)1$1,830.45
11101-610601$1,830.45
11101-61070LOW OCTANE SPEC1$1,743.25

And here's the listing for hardened seat insert:

11131-61010STD, STD, HIGH-OCTANE SPEC6$37.52
11132-61010O/S 0.03, O/S 0.03, HIGH-OCTANE SPEC6$36.14

It indicates the hardened seats are not used in the low compression head (61070).
Hi-compression heads (61060, possibly 61050) do have the hardened seats for unleaded gas.

Empirically, what was found in the 1970s-80s when tetraethyl lead was phased out in the USA gasoline, was engines that had been in service for some time did not suffer immediate valve seat failure. The heat & hammering going on at the cast valve seat acted to harden the valve seat over time.

This is very helpful. Thank you. How do I find out which head I have?

it will be raised cast #'s on top of head along the intake/exhaust side of the head between head bolts by #2 or #3? cylinder

Hi

So after doing some research I found that my vehicle model is FJ62RG-MN. I found that I have either the 61050 or 61060 Cylinder head for Toyota Land Cruiser FJ62RG - Auto parts

I see that the seats are 11131/2-61010

So my conclusion is that I can run unleaded. Is this accurate?

Thanks
