Today my FJ62 threw a Check Engine Light. It's never thrown one before... Is there any way to read it? It's not OBD-I, right?

I'm not one that likes to just throw parts at a problem and hope that it goes away. I like to diagnose exactly what's wrong, and then fix it.

So how would all you experts recommend that I proceed?

...I searched, but couldn't find it, and I didn't look at the FAQ this time.
THANKS VERY MUCH FOR POINTING ME TO THAT!

Okay - just went and read the codes:

Codes:
25: - Air Fuel Ratio Lean Malfunction
26: - Air Fuel Ratio Rich Malfunction

So - To me, this sounds like it's akin to the infamous P0170 code for the 5VZ-FE 3.4L V6. So does the same advice apply? Clean the MAF sensor. Check the air filter. Maybe the o2 sensor?

Advice?

Different type of MAF sensor on the 3FE, it's really just a big flapper in the airbox. But that does sound like an O2 sensor problem.

Anybody else?

Anybody else?

Well, if you don't like the O2 sensor suggestion, try anything else which might make it run lean or rich in a way that the ECU can't compensate:
air leaks
malfunctioning AFM
leaky/blocked injector(s)
leaky CSI
bad FPR
intermittent injector circuitry
badly needs tune up (plugs,wires,cap,rotor)
bad ECU

That's all I can think of off the top of my head, but I'm sure there's lots more. If you don't want to throw parts at it you're going to have to start testing lot's of things. IMOP, sometimes throwing parts at it is the correct thing. Ie,
-if you haven't done a tune up in a while, do it
-if you've never changed your O2 sensors, take Ken's advice and just do it
-if your fpr is original, think about changing it
-etc, etc.
They're all things that need to be done, and maybe you'll get lucky and your problem will go away.

The o2 sensor is definitely where I'll start. I was just gauging for any other suggestions of what other relatively simple stuff I should look at.

I replaced both O2 sensors as a maintenance item. My rig has just over 200K, and I have read several posts where there was a problem with the O2 sensors at about the same mileage, so I figured I'd head it off at the pass. The easiest way to get to the rear O2 sensor is from the inside of the vehicle. Take off the transmission tunnel cover and use a real long extension. I don't know how you would get to either the nuts or the connector any other way. If you haven't replaced the shift linkage bushings and grommets yet, you might as well get those ordered before you start. It's a piece of cake while you have the transmission tunnel open, and your shifter will actually indicate the correct gear. The bushings and grommets are pretty cheap. And if you haven't replaced the shifter bushings do those too. My shifter has no slop at all now, and all those parts are cheap.

Did you resolve the problem? If so what was it and how did you fix it? I have the same problem.
