FJ62 3B diesel swap

Hello all! I have started my wonderful journey on 3B swapping my FJ 62……. All of the 60 series guys are giving me crap, and saying that the swap will suck. What do they know? They are all FJ guys from the states.

Anyways, I have started off by trying to remove my transmission, however, the transmission keeps hitting the trans tunnel, I don’t know why, I can’t move it up OR down, to move it back. Please look at the image below. What am I missing? Looks like the transmission bell housing needs to come off this “starter motor stud” that’s a 1/2 long. I can’t even find a FSM manual for the repair either unfortunately.

lol. Yeah, not a fan of the 3B swap. The 13BT is adequate, but the 3B, not so much.

You are probably bound up or tightened on the input shaft of the transmission. Might be rusted in a little. Try raising/lowering the engine/tranny combo in different ways until it pops free.

Well, that’s what I got a 90 fj62 US with all the guts from a 84 bj60 Can spec. I’m running 235/85 r16 with 3.73
I’m changing the gear back to 4.11 and will add a turbo on the 3B.
From my experience, if you live on a flat ground area, it can be a daily drive vehicle but if there is hill all around not so much…
For me it is a family trip project so it’s fun

For the transmission, are you pulling it from a donnor truck or there is a manual tranny already in the 62? You can remove the Hi/Low linkage from the T-case to give more freeway. Is the engine original to the frame?

Take care of the engine exhaust since it may stand on it while lowering the combo.

3B is just an old underpowered engine ahah.
Both my 75 and 62 came with them so I kept it that way. If I was going to swap engine hum? Probably a 1HZ would be the candidate since it is still in production.
3B parts are not easy to find and you need to be patient. There was a few changes over time. I think the post 10/84 3B could have be name 3BII since most of the parts are different.
I’m currently wondering if there was a mistake in the 84-90 fsm about piston. Pre90 3B had liners and the FSM and parts catalogue show only one standard piston.
After 90 3B became parent bore and 3 standard piston showed up.
But old piston and bloc also got the 1,2,3 Mark. I have new piston Mark2 and 3 with skirt scored. I send a couple piston to a machinist to measure them. (There is two different method) just to give you an idea how complex it can be to overhaul those 3B. Even the parts specialist in reputable shop get mixed…
It is a robust engine, I do appreciate them doh

Nothing inherently wrong with it other than it’s pretty underpowered, slow and parts are hard to find like @lacalvette said.

If you are going to swap, seems like much much better options than a 3b. I don’t hate the swap, I just wouldn’t do it unless I got the 3b for free personally.

Yea, it’s the Only engine I can afford. But this one I bought has 320,000 KM and runs good. Got it for a good price too. The trans really doesn’t want to come out though.

I think you need to remove the Tcase linkage, lower the back of the engine enough to clear the trans shifter cover.
(Push back the trans against engine and lower it more). Make sure exhaust down pipe is disconnected (it may hold the engine)
If the starter stud is in the way, you probably can remove it with two nut.
Did you remove the hump cover inside the cabine? (Under the carpet) oupsi!
