Ok planning for SOA suspension lift. First criteria is what size tire should I consider. looking for suggestions as far as tire size and specific tire model/brand.

Min size would be 35....Max would be somethign on the order of 37.

The idea is that I want something that is capable, yet not too crazy, and has reasonable road manners...so does that mean radial? yes looking for mud type tire I guess.

So pleas post up with suggested tire size (right now I have some 17*8) wheels (FJ cruiser black steel wheels and I think that the approx width of the wheel, I know they are 17 inches though).

So sugguest tire size, and brand and model of tire, reason for sugguestion as far as logic ...past experience...etc

This will take me some time to collect teh various parts etc but I need to make the call on tire size.

RIght now truck (86 FJ60) has V8, with manual 5 speed trans, 4.88 gears front and back, lockers front and back with 33 BFG KM2 MT. I've got to gain some ground clearance, I'm tired of steel on rocks so often.

I am running Super Swamper Trxus MT's 37x12.50 on my wagon. they are a little better off road than the BFG MT but are a little noiser on the road. If you are going to trailer it for the long runs I would recommend the Trxus Mt's. My truck is sprung over with Chev. negative arch springs and a 2 inch body lift ( for clearance for the the chev trans case) which should be close to spring over with Toyota springs and I had to trim the wheel wells to clear the 37"s.

sold all my old sets of 33's and 34's. bought a set of 35x12.50 KM2's. came with alum wheels and were actually lighter than my swamper 34's with solid steelies! running stock toyota springs with add-a-leaf. check the 60 section for my build if you need help. been a fun project.

I'm going to start collecting parts....but want to make sure I'm looking at the process as a whole and also that I'm aware of the so called "gray zone"... Will try to take a moderate approach, and address some things along the way. I've been following some of the threads or looking at various threads and I'll bug some of the guys when I see people at the various rides to see what works and what does not.
Figured starting out at tire size would be a good idea as that's where a lot of the magic happens.

honestly i think it might be best to wait till the SOA is complete, then take a look. i've seen SOA on flat almost reverse "wbent" springs with factory shackles and 33's look pretty good on it. then, newer springs like HFS or OME still have tons of arch so 35's even look too small. i put add a leafs in mine, factory springs & 1.5" ext shackles so the arch is minimal but not completely flat.

You gonna bring it to the meeting so we can see this new SOA beast or what?

welll..... yes whenever I finallly get finished. I'm in the "talking-planning" stage right now. All mental power right now...which is dangerous state to be in.

I will not buy the tires until the "end" but wanted to have some idea of what to plan for, maybe when it dawns on me that maybe I need to check clearance....or make a call on the exact size.

sorry i was calling sean out not you Elbert

Ok...another one of my many forthcoming questions...

Any special deisgn or engineering that goes into these "traction bars". The bracket that you fab that mounts to the axle and the most likely to its own fabbed crossmember that helps contorl axle wrap/deflection of the leaf springs at teh rear on a SOA truck. I know ruff stuff for one makes the bracket that mounts on teh axle for the 60.

From my novice view...of course it looks like you want the bar to be aligned square with the axle... what deisgn aspect go into the triangular shape and design features... Assume critical to place the bracket for the bar on rear axle tube properly. I've not seen a lot of dicussion on that in some of the threads.

I use a design that uses 2 bushings flat across the top of the axleabot3 inches apart and a heim joint and shackle on the other end.

I am planning on 4 linking the back of my 60, so my traction bar and spring mounts will be available.
