Hello Everyone,

I'm looking at the possibility of purchasing an 85 FJ60 with approximately 194k on it. I have owned FJ40's before but this is all new for me plus been many years. Now I thought about just going with something modern but not sure I really want to go that route. So my plan is to get everything squared away and take some trips since there are so many great spots to go see in AZ. So what should I be looking for when purchasing, and should I continue down this path as I feel its worth it. Is an FJ40 better for off road than the FJ60? Sorry for rambling just like an excited kid that wants a new toy but too many options.

I started this thread to show prospective buyers where they will need to look for rust issues in a 60 series.

Thanks, hopefully not much hidden rust as it has spent its life in a dry climate but never know what hides underneath.

underneath is good to look at, but so is up high. check the gutters

If your goal is off roading / rock crawling, a FJ40 is a much better rig. I love the 60, but it has a lot of overhang in the rear. However, the 60 is a great rig to get to remote sites with more equipment / people and with some creature comforts. It is nice and simple like the 40 but with things like A/C, a quieter ride, etc. Great outback rig.

I've had my FJ60 for over 20 years and never found a spot I couldn't handle. The extra space and AC is a real plus compared to the FJ40

I do not plan on doing any real rock crawling other than trying to get to some cool spots and will try on planning the not so difficult route but fun

85 should allow you an easier change to the H55 if you want freeway speed, as well as a lower first gear. Out here, I would check for lube leaks, how well does the cooling work, is the A/C running, and body damage more than rust if its really an AZ lived cruiser. Most all of that is fixable with moderate expenditure of time/effort/money and there are enough 6x gearheads tooling around in AZ that you should be able to find a local who might be able to lend an eye in looking at your prospective new project.

Also - check out your local to AZ discussion group. Pop on the "introduce yourself" thread and you may even be able to get history on the rig if someone knows about it.

Good Evening,

Another quick question. What is a fair price for a 85-86 fj60. Mileage is 190... no rust just a couple of surface spots. Suspension and brakes could use upgrading and the A/C has not been converted and needs charged. Paint is OG and shows but okay for now. Other than that pretty much stock and interior is a good shape other than the normal rips in the seats. Thanks in advance

Where in AZ is the truck at?
Hard to tell you a price- they’re all over the place.

It’s in the valley and been an AZ most of its life

I do not have any pictures, took it out for a test ride today. Just looking for a fair range as we know eachother, its not a garage queen or a crap box. Pretty much as I described above.

Well like black cat said in his post.
The range is all I’ve rthe place for these.
Pretty difficult to give you a round bout range.

Okay so would 9-10k be fair for a solid truck that still needs what I said?

Mine for comparison.

In my opinion, anything less than 10k for a running, driving, rust free truck is a pretty good deal.
I’m in AZ, have an AZ FJ60 with 125k. It’s on the high end of driver quality, and it’s insured for double that.

I paid $9000 for my 84 with 204,000 miles on it. It has sun bleached paint and rubber parts because of life in New Mexico. Very little if any rust and solid frame. I was able to fly to Colorado where it was being sold and drive it home with only some small heater hose repairs in route. I've been steadily going through it and repairing/servicing lots of things on it but I still feel i got a very good deal.
