Hey Everyone,

I'm adding power steering and axels from an FJ60 to my 40, already confirmed I should add lower tabs for the shocks to the front axle.

My next question is can I reuse the stock mount that used to live where I am placing my 60's power steering box? I thought I had it figured out with this spacer that I was going to mount power steering box up with but realized it wasn't going to work.

I've seen posts about the F-150 shock mounts but was hoping to reuse what I have..... any other options?

TIA!

I am going to mount the power steering box to the frame using the spacers shown in the first picture. I have drilled out and sleeved the frame to mount the box as shown in the second picture but realized that the shock mount as shown in the second picture would have to be totally cut out in order to mount the box.....so is there another place I can put the upper shock mount or do" most " people just use the F350 or whatever tower's?

I'll mock up what I had intended to do and post a picture of the issue tomorrow, thanks!

I made my own shock mount:

And flip the lower pin backwards:

I wanted to mount the steering box behind the radiator frame and in the horizontal plane. Just because.

Old pic while trying to get the original bracket fit:

Mine was very similar to this setup and has yielded very nice results. I trimmed my shock tower front and engine side to fit the box. Not a single issue has reared its head. I also used the Iron Pig Offroad template as a staring point and adjusted it to my needs. When my shocks wear out, I’ll consider something like the ford towers to get more flex.

Thanks guys for all the responses the pictures of the different options, I believe I also started with the Iron Pig Off-road as a base (thank for the reminder @Dynosoar) but in order to avoid cutting into the radiator shroud I added the 3/4" spacers which leaves my steering shaft running right though the general area vertical plane I would like to place my shock mount.

Attached is a couple pictures from today, as a backup plan might try and resolve it later after getting the frame powder coated and getting things reassembled so I can try to hack things up as little as possible but it was just as confusion when I had it mocked up before pulling everything apart. :meh:

You should wait until you have the axles back under the truck. I just did a shock tower mod for @HKforte , and I can’t even imagine trying to guess my way through the range of motion.

Like @-MaTTi- I flipped the lower pins on two of my rigs while I was doing shock mods.

Guessing you're right with all the variables it's not really a one size fits all.

Are you planning to sleeve the mounting holes through the frame?

@69LC I sleeved the holes, drilled oversize on the outside and welded tube between the walls of the frame. I then ground it all down so it's hard to see in the pictures.

Looking at bolts for the box and spring mounts to the frame seems like grade 7 or 8 is what I'm after, if I eliminate the spacer I can reuse the original bolts but then I need to cut more of my junk..... and I also remember the tie rods and relay rod lining up right set as they had been in the 60 with the spacer.

See above pics for what I did.

I will throw one more opinion into the ring. I cut the F250 shock mounts to sit back a little on the frame.

Do you think that it’s ok to weld cast iron in that way? I have understood you’ll get fractures/hairline cracks. Just wondering, I’m not sure, just heard.

Might not be a great idea but looks it like won't get used anyway. I'll check with the metal guys at work and see what they think about that, I've recently started learning metal work and rely on them for the welding. I was trying to avoid welds to the frame at spring mounts also to avoid cracks so rivets that needed to be removed are being replaced with bolts.

Wow some of these shock mounts are almost as attractive as the stock one.... the last two examples .........oh so clean! 😍
