Hey guys,

I’m new to the forum and I’m a proud owner of an 84 fj60. Lately I’ve been having issues with turning it off. It tends to shake and not want to turn off when I try turning it off on both neutral and in first gear. I have to put it in first and let go of the clutch slowly so it can turn off. Another issue I’ve been having is flooding. I’ll ride it to a nearby grocery store and once I come out and try to turn it on it gives me trouble. It usually takes several minutes and several cranks. I took it to The Land Cruiser Specialist here in Austin, Tx. Recently to have a leak fixed and all I was told was that it was idling too high. That was fixed, yet it’s still resuming with the same issues. Any thoughts? Thanks!

The first question is sometimes called dieseling. There was a post here yesterday about it. Engine runs after ignition off

The flooding/ hard start could be vapor lock, that can sometimes be because of a carb cooling fan problem.
Vapor lock is probably the wrong term, but the fuel in the carb can boil off and make it hard to start especially in hot weather.

Oh and welcome!

Thanks for the insight! I’ll probably be heading back to the specialist next week and go over these possibilities with him. Just wish I had more Auto mechanic knowledge. Appreciate you!

Stock Carb? I had the same problem and got it fixed, but can only speak about Weber carbs.

Ok, me too. I had terrible dieseling when I got mine back from being desmogged and the idle was set over 1000 to keep a smooth idle. You also had to hit first and second just right to avoid the engine stumbling. Stock idle is 600-650rpm. The solution was to have the jets opened a bit and the idle turned down. Your weber probably came with several sets. I wish I could tell you exactly what to change them to but I cant. My mechanic just tapped the jets that were on there slightly to open it up. My mechanic, who is a wizard with classic cars recommended that I go with the weber carb verses sending my stock one off to be rebuilt. His reasoning was what he knew webers really well and could get me up and going right away. He did and I am very happy with my setup. There are a lot of purist on here that will really poo poo the weber but mine has worked great for me once I got it tuned right. I have done several things under the hood since this pic was taken, but this is my engine bay with the weber 38. About 160K miles on my engine and it is very peppy and will keep up with interstate traffic at 70-75 at 2500rpm since I got the H55 upgrade.

Nice looking 60 ya got there. Condition looks pristine! After glancing at your photos, I feel like my carburetor might be missing a hose. Also realized that my carb fan isn’t connected/functioning. Might that be a problem?

You dont need that carb fan with the weber carb. You need an old school hot rod mechanic that really knows how to tune Weber carbs. Also make sure it is a 38...the other one that folks have tried on these rigs are too small.
