I know it's still a little chilly to be talking air conditioning, but I was reading through my FSM and found the below. What's the story behind this? Has anyone ever seen this or have it? I'm curious...

I've seen pictures before of non-US spec (60/61/62?) cruisers that have rear A/C and a 3rd row. The vents run right up the C-pillar and join in the middle. It looked like a pretty sweet setup.

i've seen the rear A/C units in a high top 60 w/ 3rd row seat... pretty cool. But I got the impression it runs off of the same compressor, so more cold air in back but not necessarily more cold air total.

I've seen only one cruiser here in Panamá high roof GX specs. I thought is the same system as in 80 series .. the same compresor .. 2 condenser more air criculation.

I looked in to getting the factory ducts and retro fitting an aftermarket condensor to run rear air. As far as I could tell the ducts were designed for high roof, and would take up a bunch of the head room in a low roof truck. Pretty hot in MS, but I decided to live with the single AC.

Yeah I'd like to see one of the Auzzie's on the list take a pic of one. Seems like you could source out parts from the once-in-a-blue-moon OZ parts run. I saw a rear A/C switch on ebay once. I wonder if the highroof is absolutely required...like if the duct work is routed up there. Seems like the plastic housing that mates to the unit would be different at the pillar compared to our USA models.

W/ the panoramic windows our rigs sport and hot southern summers, a rear A/C unit would be a nice upgrade. I know there are aux. heater manufacturers, but does anyone know of an aftermarket auxilary A/C maker? Is there anyway the USA model center heater console could be adapted to blow A/C air?

Old thread but got me wondering on the options since its been over 100 for 20 plus days. Mike

I think it would be very feasible to put a Red Dot standa alone unit in the back and have hoses made up to connect to the compressor up front. Red Dot's have a self contained fan, evaporator coil and it's own controls. The downfall is it would not be accessible from the driver's seat. We have some Red Dots in some equipment and a few KW's and they are awesome! They will frost the windows with 134.

I was thinking more about a self contained unit that would fit in the back of a 60,62,80 with one intake and one out vent. Not as good as vents on the roof but something to help the front unit. Compressor seems to be the biggest problem.Drain would be easy and self contained would eliminate alot of hard lines to the front and custom pieces. Whats the smallest size compressor out there... prius?iI dont wont to hook to the front compressor. MIke

Just some thoughts off the top of my head, and I know nothing about AC, so take it for what it's worth. :p

I see a few ways to do this and they all seem to have serious drawbacks:

1: Use the existing components and modify the rear heater and use it's fan to blow cold air. Probably won't get you a ton of cold air, but you'll get something in the rear anyway. This seems feasible to me, but then again I don't really know jack about AC systems.

2: Rig up a stand alone system for the rear by modifying an existing unit. This seems like it could take up some serious space and might be tough to find a unit that would fit.

3: What are the chances of being able to make your own system using another smaller compressor? Maybe hooking up a small electric motor to spin the compressor and wiring it to a dash switch. You could just turn it on when you need it and hopefully your alternator and battery can handle the extra load.

4: If you can modify the existing rear heater to blow cold air with it's fan, then maybe there's an upgraded compressor option to get more cold air into the system. This seems like the easiest option to me.

Any if these seem even remotely plausible?

AC coils operate at significantly higher pressures than the coolant system. I believe the high side pressure is somewhere around 400 psi and the low side 150 or so... I don't know how overbuilt, if at all, the rear heater core is on 60 series, but chances are eventually you will have a rupture followed by a nice ice block under the seat...

My sahara had it,i threw it to the tip.
The rear box takes up room,i never turned it on so don't know if its worth it or not.
I didn't like AC pipes running full length of car either.
i insulated the whole roof and replaces all seals, rubbers,i honestly think that is a better option, especially the insulation, window tint helps bigtime also.
The heat coming through the roof has a big effect.

I agree goldchaser, reducing the outside load is where to start. Was trying to figure the best roof top insulation, what did you use and how did you apply it? Thanks, MIke

5mm self adhesive neoprene rubber, silver on one side,i actually can't remember where i got it,they use it to insulate sheds also im sure so maybe try building supply companies.

rear AC

I don't know if this AC is oem or aftermarker? is the sunroof on the pic OEM?
this 1985 fj60 has 3f engine. The owner say the 3f come with the truck (only one owner since 1985). It is possible? 3F on fj60?

I'm by no means an expert, but I thought the 3FE came in the 62, even over seas? Never heard of a 60 with a factory 3FE.

Carb'd 3F came in the non-US cruisers after or around '85, I think. The AC and sunroof and third row is factory...again just not here in the US.

Looks like its probably a Sahara spec Fj60.

this 1985 fj60 has 3F carburator engine. 4 speed manual trans. and has GX sticker on driver fender.
It is in south america.
fj60 came with sunroof as an option?
