Yup, they do drop down there. That axle is wicked shiney, nice work. I wish my FF was that shiney.

this is a pretty near 100% bolt in swap, correct.
the diffs are the same, the brake parts are the same...with the execption of the hardlines,....i assume the drum is the same part as that of the semi float?
so this just drops in, in place of the SFer.

been thinking about this myself for some time now.

Correct, apparently the hardlines shape are the only difference between my 87 semi and this late 80's FF.

Now I'm going to have to go look at mine. I don't recall any such issue with the brake plumbing.

Mine bolted right up... There might be slight variations depending on if they were originally for FJ60, 61's, 62s, etc ...

ok, where can i find one on the east coast?
i called $pector, and they quoted me a shipping price of more than the axle it's self.....and i was actually surprised...i figured a couple bills, but five of them to get it to me.
did canadian trucks get floaters?

Excuse my ignorance but is there an option/ability to "unlock the hubs" for the back FF axle? Also what are the pros/cons for these axles for the rear? Can you perform an after-market disk brakes conversion for these? Thanks.

The FF is a heavier duty rear. It is set up like the front axle where you have a hub with in and outboard bearings that ride on a spindle. If you break an axle you can simply pull out the axle and still have the hub and wheel intact on the spindle and be mobile. Unlike if you broke a semi floater , the axle, wheel and hub would come out and leave you sitting on the brake shoes.

It's a big cool factor as well. :hillbilly:

Yep, just looked at mine too. Bolted into place like it was made for it. Took a picture just for photo documentation. Now if I could just convince the :censor: :censor: :censor: camera to allow me to d/l them. :bang::bang::bang::bang:

I haven't tried it, but it looks like a front locking hub would bolt onto a FF rear hub like it was intended to be there. They don't come that way, and for locking hubs to be installed at the rear you'd need to have someone make you a set of double end-splined axle shafts. I don't think going with locking hubs in the rear is a good plan. I've seen the aftermath of a famous name FF conversion kit when one of their hubs failed. Took out a bunch of parts and cost a bunch of money to fix. Granted, Aisin hubs are much better hubs. I still wouldn't do it.

Is that...dare I even ask...NEW???
...Oh and how much did it cost if you don't mind me asking?
Much of the small parts are new.
It cost thousands of USD, but everything is new or cleaned & powdercoated to be new. All threaded holes chased, all new hardware installed with anti-seez, new ARB, new bearings, new R&P gears, new drums, new almost evrything inside the drums....

What gearing did you get in the set up.
Is it new from Japan?
Did you get the fronts too or are you just going with the rears.
3.70 LSD came with it. Now it is 4.56 ARB.

It is new from Ohio;)

A front is in the works now to match the rear: 4.56, LSD, Aisin lockouts, big calipers, new bearings & seals, clean & PC everything...

Here would be the only slight modification to the trained eye. I didn't realize until after I ordered the brake lines, and compared it next to my semi float, that there were no tabs welded to the axle tube for the clamps.
I suppose if I ordered for a full float the lines would have curved down farther for the clamp tab which is on the tube perch. It slipped my mind as I thought they were the same in the housing area.
I had to make small extensions to reach the line. Rewelding was not an option to me after being powder coated.

Further research shows the brake line routing & clamping is very slightly changed in 1987.

87-early trucks have the brake tab on the spring pad (as does this FF).

88-later trucks have the line as pictured and a mount tab welded up higher right on the axle tube.

This is not a SF vs FF difference.

In retrospect, we shoulda got 87-earlier lines.

Your fix works fine and looks stock.

found one on the east coast, so i just joined club.
and i'll admit right now, i have wanted one just for the cool factor....and the bearings being the same front and rear.....yeah that's the reason.

My 1987 model year 60 has a Oct. 86 build date and has the tab on the axle tube...:hmm:

Jealous I am, very much.

A FF is on my list still for future upgrades. Hopefully by the time I manage to get one I'll be able to find a new reseller for the Downey FZJ80 electric to manual locker conversion kit. Too bad ARB doesn't sell manual lockers :frown:
