Didnt quite workout with the shop I planned to have rebuild my engine. Do I'm doing it. got it cleaned up, some Core plugs in and got the crank in today. Oil clearances looked beautiful. Gonna do the pistons tomorrow.

Pump is on. Got the idler gear pressed on and installed the other gears. Camshaft is in. I ordered new bolts for the thrust plate. Waiting on a few new nuts and bolts and I should be putting the gear assembly together and hopefully the oil cooler this weekend. Maybe even get the fuel pump on, well see. Also got a replica 12HT valve cover decal from decaldog.com.

Heres some updates for the build. Had to custom order a thicker head gasket to compensate for a tall piston protrusion. Got the custom built MLS head gasket from John at Gaskets-to-go. Thanks John.

Set valve lash on the 12ht tonight. Set it to .010" intake and .016" exhaust. This was setting them cold, most of them were really far out. I'll do another adjustment hot to specs which is .008" and .014" after that first good run.

Man that engine is a work of art. You should have built two, one for your Cruiser and one for display! Too bad that isn't exactly practical.

I'm actually considering selling the cruiser when I get finished. Wierd, even though this engine will get a half a million miles out if it, I'm kinda hunting around for another to swap a cummins in. Way more supported parts and go faster goods. Or maybe I'll just keep it in the family forever and my grandchildren will drive it one day. I'm torn. This engine is built to last nine the less!

Your work is phenomenal. I would be curious to know what a ball-park cost for this type of restoration/rebuild would run. Just in case I win a lottery and want to treat my 2H to this level of attention...

So I have around 12Gs into this build now (my wife keeps a tally and brings it up everytime a new part arrives. And that's with me doing ALL the ceramic coating myself. This also includes obscure work like custom fabbing a 3" shut off valve, water to air intercooler parts, custom guage setups that I will put on and many used oem parts from Australia that are expensive, even before shipping. I had a mix-matched setup of coaster parts and custom brackets. Originally the engine was thrown together to get the alternator and AC working. But did not work. The engine had a 5 belt coaster crank pulley and wrong pump pulleys, wrong brackets. This misaligned parts were what caused my belts to wear and break quickly, thus immediately redlining the coolant temp going down the highway and blowing the head gasket (I had only owned it about 3 months till then). That's why I'm here now. But I bought new correct hj61 crank pulley, ac brackets, alternator brackets and alternator (yeah, the alt mount broke too due to bad alignment). Those items themselves have cost me about $1100. Oh, I also had to buy 2 MLS head gaskets due to my piston protrusion being to high, my fault for assuming the machine shop wouldnt just hack it down so much to get 0Ra. Had to get another custom one made to my specs.
If you were to get a used 12ht ($6500), rebuilt everything stock, bearings, pistons, everything. Doing the work all yourself it will cost around $1000 in a rebuild kit, $600 in machining fees, probably another few hundred in just chemicals like cleaning supplies, hoses, clamps, paint and sealants. So I would guess someone could build solid 12HT for about $8Gs. I have went way over the top. Ha ha

New alternator, from national in AUS.
It's also internally regulated. So I can scrap the external regulator in the engine bay too. Also is a 120amp.

Thank you for that thorough reply. You did go over the top, but it is truly very well done. I hope you keep it and are able to enjoy it.
