I am at a crossroads deciding which way to go on the suspension for my fj45 build. My fj45 will be powered by a turbo 3b, 5 speed, split case. I have an original fj45 frame, but it has been welded to. The section between the cab and rear axle has been plated on the inside. This is not ideal as I did not do the work and have no idea what is under it (did the rust get cut out completely?). The welds all look nice enough. I know for sure I want to go with a coil suspension set up. I think I can source all the parts from an fj80 cheaper than the cost of an OME leaf kit. I will have some extra weight as it will be built for expedition type travel, winch and bumper on the front, bumper and large fuel tank in the rear. I may also like to put a small pop up camper on it one day. Such as a four wheel camper (eagle ~ 900lbs?). I will be running 255/85/16’s on split rims. Current frame has good 45 axles, front disk brakes, rear FF.

So the idea is to get a fj80 frame, suspension, axles, steering. I think these can be found for about $1000 from a roll over or damaged engine.

My options are:

1) Fit the 45 body to the 80 series frame.
Advantages: - steering box, suspension, axles already fitted to frame.
- extra width of 80 axles better stability.

Disadvantages: - wheel base is slightly longer than 45, this means building an extended cab.
- “wide” look, tires extending outside of the original body lines.

2) Cut all suspension off of 80 frame and axles and fit to 45 frame and axles.

Advantages: - cab and box bolt onto frame.
- more “original” look, stock 45 axle width.
- keeping original frame and body together.

Disadvantages: - lots of time and effort to fit suspension components, steering box.

I have read all the treads on here, I know both options are doable. Looking for opinions, and open to suggestions. Thanks.

I have been thinking same thing except would be using the full drivetrain/engine/tranny/tcase /chassis from the 80.

It seems a lot easier to just find some 2" less backspaced rims to solve 4" of the 8" width difference and just dropping the body on the rolling chassis/suspension setup of an 80.

If I end up getting sidelined with my 40 project - I have a low'mile 155k 94, 80 series running/driving on the CHEAP for you. Comes with one low lift. You could easily skip the 3b/H55 and be very happy doing a quick body pull and 45body insert.

I've done an 80 series coil in the front of a 40. It's very tight. You really need 80 series width and the you might as well use an 80 frame.

Using the whole chassis and drive train has a lot of challenges as well. The axle to engine placement is very different.
