HI All,
What is the VIN # from the picture attached ?
When I order parts from toyota do they only need VIN number ?
thanks

VIN is not needed and many dealers/parts suppliers cannot look parts up that way . Just need year/month build date but beware of some overlapping changes usually late in the year of the build dates . Post your location in your signature , it helps us to give information that applies to where you live .

That is the issue - the older trucks did not have a 17 digit VIN number , only a 10 digit number and most parts guys do not know how to use them . Dealers will have to rely on the older microfiche drawings and superceded numbers to find parts . Seek out guys like CDan (Sam Stewart Toyota ) or Beno (Onyr) here on Mud - they are specialist dealer parts guys that know Land Cruisers very well . Outside the US , you'll have to get creative or have parts shipped to use these folks .

Ex-ARMY. Not Middle eastern and not venezualen.

According to this chart http://www.sor.com/catframe.sor your FJ40 was produced Oct. of 84. This should help with finding parts. Being a military version some things could be different then those sold for the general market. If your still in the location it was sold to I would think between the VIN and model a dealer could help you out. The seventeen digit VIN is a US market thing. This was a requirement of DOT starting with the 81 model. All 40 series post 81 being imported from other markets do not have this seventeen digit. So dealer outside of the US won't be looking for the seventeen digit VIN only what was required in their market. Starting March of 69 all FJ40 imported by Toyota to the US were required to the driver's A pillar tag that included a production date. Finding a part number based on the that date really isn't that hard to do. It's prior to 3/69 that it gets tricky. Even a FJ40 imported to the US from other markets that were produced after 2/69 finding parts isn't that hard if you know it common part that was used on FJ40s imported here. Just use the chart linked for production date and give that to the dealer. But be sure the part is the same as those imported to the US first.

I should also bring up the fact that Toyota has changed how it does business as far as parts. Years ago CDan was able to get me a set of factor fog lights that were in a warehouse in Southern California. This warehouse only had parts for other markets outside the US. With the part number CDan was able to get them for me. A few years ago that all changed. Today unless the parts are listed as on a vehicles sold in the US the dealer can't get them. Heard a story of someone having problem of getting pre 68 model wipers for their FJ40 because it is not on the parts system which only goes back to 3/69. Wipers are still available new and believe it was resolved so you can buy them. A exception seems to be the H55F five speed which can be bought in the US. May have been a few that someone knew somebody and was able to get a FJ60 with one but these were not a general option you could order. Another thing that changed is dealers are no longer allowed to ship parts out of the country. Before if you had a diesel engine you could get the part from a dealer in Canada or what also happened is have someone in Canada order their diesel part in the US and have it shipped to Canada because the same part in the US was much cheaper. Something to keep in mind any old vehicle parts are harder to find. Beside used parts probably in another country even new parts that are still made and available will probably require a third party to buy and ship. Plus dealing with customs in both countries. Some Middle East countries have laws about exporting out their countries. Not sure their reasoning. Maybe figure once their oil is gone there will be pockets of iron ore where the old junk yards were.

A location will help determine parts for your cruiser... I'm looking for a country? Not your address :)

Did you try toyodiy.com ... That site is one of the best for parts diagrams and part numbers... And alot of times newer cruisers you can put in the older short vins and it will come up

I entered FJ40-0371717 as VIN # in www.toyodiy.com/parts/q?vin=FJ40-371717 and it shows model code FJ40L-KC and FJ40LV-K which is incorrect. How can I get this web site to show me FJ40R-KC which is my model. Non-disclosure agreement is at the office so I will read it when I reach office. Thanks very much for the cooperation.

Are you sure it hasn't been converted from LHD to RHD (because your chassis number/VIN FJ40- 0371717 definitely suggests it should be LHD).

(2) What are the differences in military and non-military versions of FJ40 ?
(3) I will read army non-disclosure agreement to advise location of FJ40.

Not sure what the differences are with military vehicles. Could be just something simple like hoods over the lights to help keep them from being detected from planes to having mounts for weapons.

Somebody like JohnnyC could probably give you a model for the 40s sold to the general public in your area. To do that he would need to know where the vehicle is from. That model number and your VIN could possibly work to get you parts numbers for not related military parts on your vehicle. You need to understand Toyota sold vehicles to many countries for military use. Each was a separate contract with their own specs. To my knowledge there is no generic military spec FJ40.

A exception seems to be the H55F five speed which can be bought in the US. May have been a few that someone knew somebody and was able to get a FJ60 with one but these were not a general option you could order.

When I ordered my H55F at the local dealer (w/price match) the parts guy, who seemed to be rather sharp, asked me why this unit was even available to purchase, he had never heard of a domestic 5-speed in any Land Cruiser, and stated that Toyota was very strict about not selling out of market parts. He was more interested in the answer than I was, and started running through the computer; not out of a desire to decline the sale but more for his own knowledge. Now, I did not see the screen myself, but after a few minutes he said he found the answer. For an oddball 60 series chassis (not sure of it was F or H, 60 or 61), and for only a short 6-9 month period, the 5-speed was available in the US.

Don't quote this as truth, though I have no reason not to believe him.

I've never heard of anything other then a gas engine 60 series imported to the US. No HJ of any kind or BJ for that matter. But those (BJ) would have a different input shaft and not work on our F of 2F imported to the US. Just lucky for what ever reason we are able to get them here. It's finding the correct top cover for the 4X series which takes some doing. As far as I know they are NLA in any market. I would be curious how long the parts guy has worked for Toyota. I have a couple of 4X series full floating rear axles. Earlier has monster brakes and will probably end up looking used to find any brake parts. Later is the newer style with the same brakes as the 60 series and parts can be ordered from any dealer. Since I plan on installing a E-locker in it I bought a 70 series long spline axle for a Cable locker. Probably should look and see if I still have the original bag it came in and see if it has a date on the tag. That is the last part I bought from a local dealer that was for a cruiser never imported here. Don't think it was that long ago. Today I guessing even with a part number it would be a no go at the dealer.

You would use the R (right) version of what you put in with your vin for most parts

I knew you had either a military/government truck or special order deal due to the paint code designation of 000 ... Most military trucks went with this paint code... As well as special order paint such as a special paint for say a utility company when ordering in bulk

The problem is that with most utility trucks, fire trucks and other government trucks drivetrain was not always the latest version

This is what we know from your truck so far...

F = F/2F gas engine this case a 2F 4230cc
J = Land Cruiser type
40 = body series
R = right hand drive (most cruisers have this designation omitted )
K = 4 speed tranny (H41)
C = swing out rear doors... C type rear doors ... Aka ambi door configured FST since you don't have a V after the R we know its a FST

Also...

Trim is LK11 light gray vinyl

A11 is toyota's honsya plant

K052 = k 9.5", 05 3.70ratio, 2 =2 spider gears

Also 371xxx for your vin also puts you inline with a 1984 trucks ... Also about 70 or so away from another Aussie cruiser... In his case it's an LX version cruiser...

Austraila sells MANY ex military trucks... There are several here on mud most are 45 FST trucks

JohnnyC, this made me literally laugh out loud when I read it. Sorry I did not add anything helpful here...

(1) JohnnyC what do you mean by the sentence (You would use the R (right) version of what you put in with your vin for most parts).

(2) My Fj40 is right hand drive. It was sold by Pakistan army. Sorry for delay in reading non-disclosure agreement as it was at the office.
