Hey folks, I'm looking into purchasing a 60's to early 70's vintage FJ40. All I can find are manual transmission units. Were automatics offered? Is there a stock Toyota transmission that can be used to convert these into automatic using the original engine and transfer case. Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks

Zoli

40`s all were manual transmissions. People have done V-8 conversions with automatics. Anything is possible with money and fabrication skills and time.

Nope.

But with a well stocked machine shop and lots of experience, anything is possible.

My wife's 40 is getting an 89 FJ62 3Fe and A/T this winter. That's an "all-Toyota" setup, but it uses the late model split case.

There are plenty of other ways to get an A/T .

Yep, it's been done before and requires a little axle relocation, and a little bit of this and that.

So would it be considered blaspheme to put a complete Cherokee 4 liter drive train into an FJ40?

I got nothing........nope, still nothing.....

Downey Off Road Mfg once made an adapter to use a GM 700R4 automatic tranny with the Landcruiser 6 cylinder engine, worked perfectly, had it in an FJ45, BUT the package would have been too long to use in an FJ40, rear drive shaft would have been 2 u-joints welded together. I believe I ended up selling that adapter to someone who wanted it for a Landcruiser museum ???

The good ole' days.

 I'd say hard pass on that idea.

While the 4.0L is a decent engine, there are other issues to deal with. I'm assuming you are talking about the AW4 automatic which is an Aisin tranny. It seems to be a decent enough tranny. The NP203 t-case behind it is centered rear output which won't work with cruiser axles. Are you thinking Jeep axles? :poop: that is the Dana 35c that was in Cherokees? Terrible idea. Now you can update to a bigger axle but your swap is getting more and more complex.

If you are going to the trouble to swap because you want an automatic (nothing wrong with an automatic) you see most people swap to V8 or diesel. In an FJ40, you have not much room to work with for rear driveshaft. A V8 swap you can move the engine forward to get more room for rear driveshaft... not too mention much more power than a 4.0L.

I don't think you will get an inline 6 and Toyota auto in an FJ40 without moving that rear axle back a bit.

A V8 is a more compact engine choice for a longer trans [auto] in a SWB vehicle like an FJ40. And less blasphemous.

Having pulled that setup out of a 62 all in one piece, it’s huge!!!

Awesome points, but a Ford 9" in the rear would make for an awesome build.

Either way, something to remember when swapping axles is bolt patterns. To maintain the FJ40 6 bolt wheels and keep them the same you're looking at putting in some kind of a Chevy axle...and they're all garbage.

Yes it is, I have one sitting on the floor right now. I thought the t-case was never going to get past the firewall!

It will make an interesting project this fall.

Thank you very much for the info and insight. Looks like the jeep idea is dead. I see a bunch of small chevy V8 builds out there. Now I understand why.
