Hello,
I am new to the FJ world and have recently bought myself a project (to put it lightly)!!! The person before me has done quite a number to the poor thing, and I am looking to rectify some of the problems. The first on the list of many, is the steering column. When I got it there was an early model Trans-Am column in it. However it was mounted upside down and reduced to its lowest functioning form. I am re-wiring the entire FJ and need to know what GM column bolts up with the least amount of FAB/Hassle??!! The wiring harness is pre-fab'd and is made for the sb350 that is in it. I am looking into an early model Jeep since those were still made by GM.

Any advise would be great! Thanks

Believe it or not the Trans-Am / Camaro is the GM column you want since it didn't have the shifter on the column. If the one you currently have is trash, source another. Otherwise go back to a stock column and deal with the wiring mating issues.

I used a late 80s Chev S-10 column and really like it. I did modify the stock GM dash mount to get it to set up higher into the dash. Tilt wheel, high/low beams in the turn signal stalk, ignition key in the column (my 71 was on the dash), smaller steering wheel for more long leg room.

Mine was out of an 86 camaro.
Had to make a plate for it to run through the firewall with the factory cruiser bucket and I also modified the factory camaro dash mount (made my own bracket) to fit in the cruiser dash.
Only issue that was really un expected and somewhat of a pain was some interference w/ the break pedal arm.
I ended up cutting it in a couple places to sort of route it around the column a bit better and re welding it.

Here's a couple pics of that

Okay! Great! This gives me some options to explore! Thanks for the help! Thanks for the pictures too! I'll hit you guys up if I run into some more issues... Thanks again.

the column in 90s cherokees were gm columns... i know this because the dealer didnt carry a tumbler for them...

Chicagos' post reminded me that I also had brake pedal to column/switch interference problems. Instead of cutting and welding I heated and re-bent the pedal arm. Same finished results as Chicago.

I bought an aftermarket GM column off eBay. Pretty good deal. Has flasher switch, signals, and tilt.

What length steering column did you buy?

I am looking to make the same change, but they have several lengths and yours looks just about perfect.

Did you use a universal joint to mate the GM column up with the FJ40 steering?

Thanks!
