1977 FJ40 - no history. Just purchased. Installed new carb and D.U.I. distributor. Runs for the the first time in 20+ years. Woo hoo!

No pressure on the clutch pedal. Gear shifter moves between positions but no movement. Transfer case shifter moves up and back but not side to side.

Here is my question: I thought, worst case, you can slam it into gear and get it to move. Or start it in gear and it would move no matter the condition of the clutch. Put in gear, nothing happens. Is this a clutch issue, transmission, or transferissue?

Thanks in advance for your advice.

Dave

1st, no resistance at the pedal means the clutch master cylinder or slave cylder is shot or has no fluid. You can turn the engine over in gear and see if I moves. Id disable the ignition 1st.

Clutch system need bleeding? Do you have fluid in the reservoir?

Transmission can be in gear when engine is starting and no bump or movement.

The transfer case shifter has 4 positions? It will move up or down H1 and H2 but won't move into N or L4. Is it possible it moves Up and Down in N and I am not really getting H1 and H2? Any tricks into getting it into L4? Finally, if the clutch and pressure plate is completely shot, it should still move when put in gear, right?

Take off the inspection cover under the bell housing and make sure everything spins when you have someone bump the starter.

Also, it’s possible to have a stuck transfer case shifter. Climb under the truck and see if you can move the shifter linkage manually. H to L will shift left to right or driver to passenger side on the top of the transfer case.

You gotta get the t/case shifter moving sode to side . As metioned b4 you could be in neutral.
