I’m in the process of a complete factory correct fuel system overhaul on my 1976 FJ40. I know there is a cushion under tank but see there is also a CUSHION, FUEL TANK PROTECTOR 77815-90300 as shown below and here.

Does anyone have any photos they can post up that shows exactly where this goes along with dimensions of original cushion for the protector cover?

IIRC, it's a pair of rubber strips, about 1/8" thick, 3" wide and as long as the flat of the tank well. It appeared to me be be an attempt to both quiet the metal-to-metal rubbing noise and save paint. They're positioned about 3" in from the edge on each side. Any rubber strips about that size will do the job. They weren't glued in on mine; they just sat on the floor.

Thanks for this. What I’ve discovered is there appears to be a cushion for both the bottom of the tank (where it sits in the well as shown) and the top of the tank under the metal tank cover “protector”. The bottom of the tank calls for 4 cushions and the top requires two strips.

Thanks for everyone showing what they did on the bottom of the tank. What I’m trying to find out is the padding beneath the gas tank cover and the top of the tank.

I cut rubber strips about 2” X 6”x1/8” thick and rested them on the top of the tank where the “step” area is on the gas tank protector cover. I also put a strip on the drivers side. When bolting down the cover, the strips make a good cushion so there is no metal touching metal.

This may/may not help specifically but this is what was under my tank. I circled the three that were there, might've been 4 but it was so dirty I might've brushed one off without realizing. Only two were still stuck to the floor at this point.
