I am moving to Calgary, Canada in two months and want to take my 79 FJ40 and possibly my 84 FJ60 with me. Has anyone on mud done this before? Would like to get as much advice as possible before I start the process. A few questions. Do I need to install daytime running lights? If so how & the cost? How much will the total cost be for both the 79 & 84?

Thanks in advance.

I'm pretty sure you do not need daytime running lights, lots of old trucks and cars here without them. What part of the oilfield do you work in?

Daytime running light requirements affect vehicles manufactured after 1990.

I will be working in crude oil supply/trading for the next 2 years and after that hope to return to E&P/Upstream. I am looking forward to the off road opportunities up near Calgary. Looks like there are some awesome trails.

Are you going to stay in canada? or eventually return and live in the the U.S.

if your going to Return to the U.S. I would say to check with USAA insurance ... they have a out of country policy which is non-resident insurance.... which means you dont have to give up your plates and you keep your trucks insured...

if your going to stay and become a perment resident.. then you can claim your truck under homestead act of canada.. you have to have it inspected and go through transport canada...

i have done both... not that big of a deal except the inspection for the province might be different in Alberta than BC. BC a vehicle has to be perfect... aka no rust ...

good luck and i hope this might help

I will probably be in Canada no more than 4 years. Thanks for the tip. I will contact USAA to get the details..
I am in trouble if Alberta is strict, cuase my 40 is a rust bucket.
However, I am looking to restore it once I get up into Canada. Do you know of any honest and good cruiser restorators in Canada? Hopefully close to Calgary.
Thanks,
David

Found this thread while searching for info on bringing a vehicle in the other direction.

How did your move go? Any snags on bringing the trucks to Canada?

Hope everything went well.

USAA only insures U.S. military members... And they no longer write policies for Canada.

I'd say "why bring the FJ60?" but if it has a good frame I would bring it up and transplant a sweet diesel into it... with a 5 speed that we never got in the U.S.

Cheers-
