Anyone know if there is a difference between OEM axles/differentials in a 1970 FJ40 compared to a 1976 FJ40? I had someone tell me the 76 OEM set up was improved and more heavy duty than the 70 models.

the early diffs and front axles were coarse spline and the later stuff fine spline, we got the change over here around 1975 ish

Hi All:

For a US-market FJ40, the axle shafts and differentials are the same between the 1970, and 1976 FJ40.

The differences are in the front axle outer bits; the 1970 FJ40 has coarse-spline Birfield (CV) joints and locking hubs, while the 1976 FJ40 has fine-spline Birfields and lock-out hubs.

This all went hand-in-hand with the change from front drum brakes to front disc brakes in the 1976 year models (in the US market.)

Regards,

Alan
