The early fj40's single Barrel carburetors on the F motors came in two flavors... Early without a solonoid and wire, later with... What is the solonoids function? Can you put a later carburetor onto an earlier motor and what would be involved?

There are actually at least 6 iterations of the 1bbl I can think of.

Yes, they are interchangeable.
The solenoid is an idle cutoff. The ICS just needs to get 12V ignition power, usually from the 12V+ terminal of the coil.
